William DeVane Obituary

WILLIAM ANDRES DEVANE
SHELBY – Bill was born July 28, 1933, in Fayetteville, North Carolina to William A. and Janie Stevens DeVane. He graduated from Darlington School in 1951, attended N.C. State and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BS in Business in 1955.He earned his CPA designation in Charlotte.
He worked for Riegel Paper Company in Wilmington, N.C., Cherry, Bekaert, and Holland Accounting Firm in Charlotte, and traveled extensively in his Public Accounting capacity. He served in the North Carolina National Guard, and was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, Shelby.
Bill was predeceased by his parents and by his son, William A DeVane III. He is survived by his devoted wife, Melissa of the home; his sister, Mary D. Welsh of Fargo, North Dakota; nieces, Janie Schubart and Liz Sterling and their families; step children, Shannon Blackley (Chip) of Shelby, Laurie Parker (Charles) of Hatteras and Ben Burroughs (Todd) of Rochester, New York; step grandchildren, Gracie and Shem Blackley, Rennie, Cate and Josie Parker; his first wife, Garrett DeVane; and his beloved canine companions Harry and Oliver.
Bill loved travel, yard projects, concerts, aircraft, flying, electronics, computers and botany. He cherished spending time with his family.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, and a marker will be placed in Sardis Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte. The family's many, many thanks to all who supported and made Bill comfortable during his brief illness; Carolinas Healthcare-Cleveland, including the ICU Unit, and Hospice at Wendover.
Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, Cleveland County Humane Society Shelter, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the charity of one's choice.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home of Shelby.
