Daniel Hoffman Obituary

Daniel N. Hoffman, Ph.D. CHARLOTTE - Daniel N. Hoffman, Ph.D., aged 75, passed away on October 2nd, 2018, four days short of his 76th birthday. He passed peacefully at home, on his own terms, after a sudden diagnosis and brave struggle with cancer. Dan was born in Chicago to Leo and Estelle Hoffman, whose move to Charlotte brought their son here. Dan is survived by his wife of 32 years, Dorothea Hoffman; his sister, Michele (Mickey) Hoffman and her spouse Miles Goldfein of California; his aunt Irene Goren 98 of Chicago; many cousins, and a worldwide network of friends and colleagues. Dan had an extremely active professional and intellectual life. He graduated 11th in his class of 1963 from the University of Chicago with a major in political science. He received his Cum Laude LLB. in 1966 from Harvard Law School (Law Review) and was admitted to the Bar, District of Columbia, in 1967. Dan graduated Cum Laude with his Political Science, Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1977. In 1983 he took a professor position at Johnson C. Smith University, where he taught until his 2008 retirement, ultimately named Professor Emeritus in 2013, an honor he cherished. Dan was Charlotte's number one Cubs fan. Dan's motto: Keep no secrets; waste no information; reinvent reality. Memorial Gathering to be announced later.

An example of the kindness that I mentioned in my entry at the time of Dan's death: Back during the 1966-1967 school year at HLS, my third year, I was going through some personal troubles of a romantic nature, and was feeling depressed, etc., and Dan and our mutual friend, Harvard Walthall, my classmate, took me to a Chinese restaurant, I believe Joyce Chen's restaurant in Cambridge. I don't think I had ever eaten Chinese food before and it was great to be introduced to it by friends. Of course, since then I have eaten many wonderful Chinese and other Asian meals. Just one of many examples of memories. I have of Dan and his kindness and friendship.

I have many memories of Dan stemming from first getting to know him on Story 4 during 1964-1965 school year. One of the smartest fellows I've known. Kindness doesn't always go with smartness. Dan was kind.
