Leslie Scott Obituary

Leslie Scott Febuary 1, 1960 April 4, 2017 CHARLOTTE - Ceramic artist Leslie Remsen Scott, who was creating the MoRA art project at Monroe Road on Conference Drive, died unexpectedly April 4, 2017, of an unknown cause. She was 57. Mrs. Scott and her family moved to Charlotte from the San Francisco Bay area in 2011 and was developing a name for herself locally while creating projects regionally as well and in other states. MoRA is an advocacy group of artists and businesses from eight neighborhoods. The project is funded by two grants and is to be completed by June 1, 2018. The family said the project is ahead of schedule, 40% done, although no structure is yet on site. Family members from several states converged at the Scott's residence in old Providence neighborhood before the backyard memorial service was held for Mrs. Scott at a neighbors house April 8. Born at Camp Irwin, California, Mrs. Scott was known for her outgoing personality and her love of nature and color, and her annual Christmas party she held with her husband, Jeff Scott. Mrs. Scott studied art at the European Institute of design in Italy 1980 to 82 and earned a degree. She evolved as a ceramicist using colorful tiles to tell progressive stories on sites varying from public parks to churches. One such project was an outside wall at Bethany Presbyterian Church in San Bruno, California, where a PG&E gas line explosion killed eight people and destroyed 30 homes. It's called "Rebirth of the Community" Locally, Mrs. Scott created the three panel mural at the government center downtown in 2014, the same year she finished the "Page Ahead" mural at the McNairy library in Greensboro. Another work is at Thompson Child Services on Wendover Road, visible from the street. Mrs. Scott leaves her husband Jeff, son Eddie 24, daughter Eileen 16, mother Joyce Remsen of Reno, Wally Remsen, her father, also of Reno, sisters, Lisa French of Windsor, California, and Laura Remsen of Fernley, Nevada and Charles Remsen, a brother, from Windsor. A memorial was additionally planned for Northern California.

This is such sad news. I went to elementary school with Leslie in Newport Beach (carpooling), and she just popped randomly into my mind for some unknown reason. So I did some googling and was delighted to learn of her career as an artist (I am a composer), and was looking forward to dropping her a note to say hello after so many years. But now I am saddened to find this tribute page. It sounds like she had a rich and fulfilling life doing good creative work. My condolences to all who love her.

Leslie was an inspiration to all who got to know her. Her knowledge, vision and dedication to the transformative power of art will stay with me forever. When we complete the MoRA project that she conceived of and worked so hard to make a reality, her legacy of inspiration will remain on display for all to see. Our thoughts go out to Leslie's dear family and friends during this difficult time.

Jeff, I'm without words...Leslie was on my mind so much lately;
wish I would have listened to my instincts to call her. My heart is heavy right now seeing her picture can't express how sorry I am for you and the children. God will help you through this...all my love.
