Juli Grainger Obituary

Juli Plant Grainger, 87, after an extended illness, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Balmoral Care Center in Lake Forest. Juli was born in Chicago, the only child of Edward and Mildred Plant. Juli's father, a Certified Public Accountant working mainly with nationwide railroad companies, passed away in 1950 at age 51. Juli's mother, widowed early, played an important part in the family, ...traveled extensively...passing away in 1997 at age 94. Beloved wife of 64 years of college sweetheart David W. Grainger; loving mother of Susan L. Grainger, Thomas P. (Elizabeth) Grainger, and Nancy K. (Michael) Burgermeister; and grandmother of James T., Kristen E. and Lauren L. Grainger; and Scott M.W. Burgermeister. Juli graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in June 1948 with a Bachelor of Philosophy in Economics. Lovely, loving, considerate, fair and fun, Juli had many, many interests and talents; antiques, folk art, cooking, decorating, entertaining, golf, snow and water skiing, swimming, philanthropy, travel and more. Juli was active over the years as a Trustee, as a Board Member, and/or on the Women's Board of the Art Institute, The Field Museum, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Rush University Medical Center, Colonial Williamsburg, and the U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Reception Rooms Fine Arts Committee. Juli played an important role in philanthropy in a number of major projects as an officer of the The Grainger Foundation of Lake Forest. Juli was an important partner with David in his career at W.W. Grainger, Inc., a family business founded in 1927. They traveled extensively, and enjoyed vacation homes in Pebble Beach, CA and Frankfort, MI. Memorial services will be private with the family.
