Mary Shaughnessy Obituary

Mary Rose Shaughnessy entered eternal life, her next adventure, surrounded by family and friends on January 22, 2018 following a short illness. Born April 28, 1931 in Kansas City to Frances S. and Joseph B. Shaughnessy, her Catholic family life and education at St. Mary's College '52 led her into religious life in the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, of which she was a member for 14 years. As Sr. Joseph Frances, she taught English and Math in high schools in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. In extracurricular programs, she sponsored student groups interested in debate, speech, drama, yearbook, newspaper, film, and art. She earned a master's degree in English at Notre Dame '60 during summer vacations. After teaching at Saint Mary's, she left the Holy Cross Sisters in 1966 and entered the PhD program in English at the University of Chicago, receiving her doctorate in 1973. In 1968, she began teaching at Chicago State University where she remained the rest of her professional career, becoming a full professor and teaching a wide range of courses in the English Department: American literature, women's literature, history of literary criticism, and the always popular composition courses. During this period, she pursued further educational interests, studying scripture at Catholic Theological Union in her beloved Hyde Park. She also pursued an interest in architecture, earning a degree in interior design from Harrington Institute of Interior Design '80. China interested her, so she mastered the language, received a Fulbright and taught at Nanjing University in 1985 and 1986, continuing her connections with her students for the rest of her life. Sailing was a big part of her life from 1980-1996. Her catboat Rum Rum Tugger and Jackson Park Yacht Club were her summer home. After her retirement from teaching in 1996, she continued working as an artist. She worked in the Hyde Park Art Center's Ceramic studio beginning in 1990 and began selling her ceramics at the Community Art Fair. She found she was good at sculpture and filled her house with busts and figures. She also enjoyed painting--watercolor, pastels and Asian ink. She taught pastel painting at the John Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. Genealogical research attracted her in retirement, and she researched the Shaughnessy family and all the various descendants back through Aaron Burr to Charlemagne. England, Europe, Israel, Egypt, China, India, Turkey, Russia, Mexico were all travel destinations. The internet brought her new ways to travel. Cruising replaced sailing. Every year she found another cruise or two. Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostels) offered another opportunity to travel. Her latest passion was discovering her singing voice as a member of the Hyde Park women's choir, Le Cantani di Chicago. Although she lived in Chicago, she maintained close relationships with her family from Kansas City, her sister Kathleen and Dick Connor's family, her sister Carol (Bob deceased) Miller's family, and her deceased brother Joe (Pat deceased) Shaughnessy's family and all their children, several of whom she nurtured and mentored when they visited and careered in Chicago. Rose will be greatly missed! Rosary at 11:00, followed by Visitation with Memorial Mass at 12:00 on February 12 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Contributions may be made in her honor to her parish, St. Thomas, Le Cantani di Chicago or to Saint Mary's College.

Ah, Mary Rose, sailor of a Cat Boat named Rum Tum Tugger, a glass coated wood sailboat moored in Jackson Park harbor. Named after a poem by T.S. Eliot (poetry was a lifelong interest of Mary Rose.) Mary Rose was a member of the Jackson Park Yacht Club in the 1980's. I had the privilege of sailing with her,

Please, if any of the family or friends of Mary Rose has a copy of her writings on her time as a religious sister could you get in touch? Unfortunately her website has been removed and it would help with my on going research.

Am so saddened. My Holiday card was just returned and then I learned this vivacious, adventurous, funny lady had left us. We are diminished. The two of us joined the staff at Chicago State University at the same time and became close friends, drifting apart a bit after retirement. I always admired her devotion to her family and her quest for knowledge: all her travels, her studying Chinese, her beautiful wooden hull boat, her painting, always searching. No one like her. My heartfelt condolences to her family. Sherwood

She found for us the past and present generations. It is our duty to continue to record for those who come after us, for all the cousins. Her light will not dim.

I have been Mary Rose's travel agent for probably ten years. Such an interesting woman. I have been trying to contact her as she had a cruise coming up on Holland. She loved life and she will be missed.

I was so happy to meet Mary Rose at the Bishop Noll Class of 1960, 55th reunion, and witness the great affection her former Noll students had for her and whom she stayed in touch with over the years. Her dear friend and former student Pam (Powell) Kosenka made sure she was able to attend, picking her up and driving her to this memorable evening. I felt blessed to be able to document this special moment in some treasured photos, which I've posted to this site. May Mary Rose rest in peace, and may the perpetual light of our dear Lord shine upon her.

Dear Family and Relatives of Mary Rose,

Mary Rose and I were in college together and entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross at the same time. Despite minimal contact (reunions, emails) we have remained friends. It was a great joy to be with her at our 65th reunion last June. As you know she has used all of her talents with a wonderful appreciation for the gift of life. I extend my condolences to and prayers for all of you at the time of this great loss.
With gratitude for her life,
Sister Grace

We are going to miss Mary Rose so much in our women's choir, Le Cantanti di Chicago. She was our mom, grandma, sister, aunt. She knew more about the internet and hi-tech than all of us "younger" ones! Rest in peace, Mary Rose.

Mary Rose has always been the epitome of the eternal: keeping up with the latest technical gadgets, she challenged all of us to not fall behind. Because to do so would be to accept aging and dying. She was as stylish as she was realizing that possessions were not the be all and end all.
No matter where in the world MR ended up she made friends easily and readily made you part of her circle of friends. She disdained the trivial and embraced depth of thought. She embraced Catholicism into which she was born as well as the Buddhism that she encountered during her world travels. She was an artist, a writer, a thinker, a fan of the arts. Her mind was always miles ahead of what she could put into words. If you were with her you could not keep up, but she always pushed you to to at least try to keep up with her, the orhodox as well as the unorthodox. We can never sound the depths of a personality such as MR's. We will have memories of her enough to last the rest of our lifetime. She did not marry and have children, but the children in her family seem to hold her in highest regard. We must say that she has lived life to the fullest. What more can one ask of life?

I extend my sincere sympathy to Mary Rose's family. She was my algebra teacher and dramatics coach during my high school days at Bishop Noll. We kept contact through the years and enjoyed occasional phone conversations. I will miss her vibrant "joie de vivre" and reading her interesting travelogues, which she always sent my way. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and her friendship will be forever treasured! May she now enjoy the eternal fruits of her "labors" resting in God's loving embrace.
