With deep regret, I just now learned of Craig's passing. An outstanding professor, mentor, and dear friend, he will be deeply missed. I enjoyed every class I took with him. It was due to his encouragement that I entered grad school, and studying under him was truly the high point of my college years. My sincerest condolences to Barbara, his children, and grandchildren. Craig was indeed a great soul.

Only recently learned of Dr. Smith's passing but as one of his former students I have only fond memories. He was passionate about his history and cared deeply about his students. I will always remember the great conversations that I had with him and all of the great classes in Russian and European History. We in the teaching profession will miss you.
