Sharon Gale Obituary

Sharon Gale passed away in Chicago, IL on August 8, 2020 at the age of 78.

In her years working as a therapist, she lent her empathetic ear and nurturing spirit to anyone who needed it. She taught people how to gain a sense of worth and self-confidence; her great sense of purpose and generous nature made a long-term impact on everyone.

Sharon is lovingly remembered by her family and friends. She was a caring and compassionate mother to her daughters Shana Gale Johansen and Leah Gale, sons-in-law Haakon Johansen and Daniel Fleming, and to her four grandchildren, Sophia, Marcus, Dylan, and Ella. Sharon instilled a strong sense of values, humor, curiosity, grace and humanity in her children and grandchildren.

Sharon was born on February 14, 1942 and was raised in Chicago. She was adopted as an infant and grew up with parents Joe and Rae Poders and brother Howard. Recently she discovered the identity of her biological family after a search that lasted more than thirty years. She learned of her mother, Molly Poris, now deceased, and others, including cousin Jill Poris and half-brother Robert Thompson. She was grateful to complete a missing piece in the picture of her life, and she treasured the face-to-face reunion with her first cousins.

Sharon was highly intelligent, artistic and curious. Following graduation from Von Steuben High School in 1959, she went on to study visual art at Washington University in St. Louis, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1965, she married Jeffrey Gale. The couple moved west, primarily residing in Marin County, California until the late 1970s. Sharon spent those years cultivating a sense of community. In 1977, she returned to Chicago with her two young daughters.

Sharon had many talents and was a creative, independent and entrepreneurial woman. Early in her career, she became renown for her culinary skills and later established a modest catering company in Chicago. She even tried her hand at opening a cozy cafe by Lake Michigan at Granville Park. Sharon became the first woman in the city of Chicago to be awarded a small business loan by First Chicago Bank. Sharon's deep dedication to her business sustained both she and her daughters throughout the 1980s.

Sharon had a strong sense of optimism and was especially keen at finding solutions to life's dilemmas, great or small. After her first bout with cancer in 1992, she viewed her experience as an opportunity to change careers and pursue a degree in psychology. While still undergoing treatment, Sharon earned a master's degree at the Adler Institute of Psychology graduating with high honors. Sharon worked for several agencies, including Peer Services of Evanston. Eventually she established her own private practice in Evanston. Her colleagues remarked that she was one of a kind, and clients have expressed deep gratitude for the extraordinary impact she made on their lives.

Sharon and her daughters Shana and Leah were inextricably bonded and were not only family, but also the best of friends. She taught her children and grandchildren to find the beauty in all the little things, and how to use humor to withstand life's inevitable vicissitudes. People who knew her remark at how she always wanted to hear how you were, and for the way she was fully present with every person she encountered.

Sharon will be remembered for her intelligence, kindness, beauty, great flair and joyful spirit. She touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Sharon kept those around her laughing and connected with others; she was magnetic. The family wishes to thank all of those who showed kindness and friendship to her throughout the years. Memorial donations may be made to the National Endowment for the Arts https://www.arts.gov/. A memorial to celebrate her life will be held in Chicago at a later date. Sharon supported me through those four dark years as I struggled with my mental health and identity. She was one of the kindest people one could ever imagine. We kept in touch even after I left Evanston. She will be remembered fondly, and may she rest in peace.

Leah, Shana and family, my heart embraces your sadness. Sharon will always be an inspiration for me. I will miss her tremendously. Luminous in presence, a creative force with abundant strength, she was a warm and generous friend. Being with Sharon was always about the best conversation, defining truths, finding laughter, and of course great food. She was so much fun! It's comforting to know that Sharon found deep satisfaction from her work and her extraordinary, loving relationship as mother and grandmother. Leah and Shana, may you find comfort in Sharon's enduring strength and the beautiful way she loved you and life.

Sharon gives a true model for self-care and support to others. During this transition, I hope her family and loved ones find love and sense of center, as she would probably encourage. May your memories and gratitude be larger than any sadness.

I always loved spending time with Sharon. It was a true pleasure to witness how close she was to Leah and her family, and to see how much they loved her back. Sharon was fully present in every conversation, every interaction. There was no pretense with her--she cut through the small talk and found ways to truly connect. I will miss seeing her, and I know her absence leaves a deep and unfillable hole for her family.

Sharon was a courageous woman who was an inspiration to me. She exuded a kind of fierce but refined energy. She raised a strong and beautiful daughter who is just as capable and intelligent (my friend, Leah, who introduced me to Sharon). Sharon leaves a legacy of wonderful children and grandchildren who I know will cherish her memory. I hope that the happy and peaceful memories will settle in her family's hearts in the days to come, eclipsing the more difficult ones, and bring some peace.

Remembering Sharon Gale and offering my deepest condolences to her daughters Shana Gale Johansen and Leah Gale, their husbands, and Sharon's 4 grandchildren. I was 13, in 7th grade, when I befriended Shana, and from there I was welcomed into their tight little family. Sharon was a powerful influence in my life and I loved her deeply. She was more than just my friend's mom and she became extended family to me. Sharon was insistent that her work life follow her heart. She loved to feed people good, healthy food. So, she started a catering business and tried her hand at opening a small cafe by the lake. She truly believed that listening was an act of love, so she studied late in her life to become a licensed therapist. She was dedicated to her clients. In 2020, Covid was now the enemy and with Shana living in Norway and Leah in another state, it was hard for family to be close and long planned get togethers had to be cancelled. I was able to see her briefly this summer. Though she was ill and her cancer was claiming her, she wanted to only hear how I was and how the kids, and Lee, were doing. Much love to the family.

Sharon was such a bright, elegant, sophisticated woman! I remember being wowed by her sense of design and her powerful intellect! Such a class act, but also empathetic. She understood how to take advantage of every moment. And that means she really lived! She never phoned it in. And I will take her example to heart. Sending love to the entire family!

I'm so sad to hear about Sharon's passing and send my condolences to the family. Sharon and I met only last year but I am so glad we did. She contacted me when she learned through genetics that we were first cousins. It was a great surprise to me to learn I had a cousin I didn't know. We had several phone conversations and email correspondence in which I was able to provide information about her birth family. Clearly it meant a great deal to her to get answers she had been seeking. I'm so pleased my brother Ken and I met with her last year to share stories and to begin to know each other. I have no doubt had we known each other growing up we would have had a close relationship. Sharon had interests, values, and qualities that felt very similar to ours. We found many commonalities that resonated with her. She was particularly interested to learn her culinary skills had a connection with our grandparents owning a little diner in Chicago. I am sad our time together was so short but I cherish having met her.

I am so saddened to hear of Sharon’s passing. My deepest condolences Shana and Leah. I have such fond memories of Sharon, hanging out at the house when Shana and I were young kids. I can picture her cooking in the kitchen for her catering business and I remember how she would talk to me while working and make me feel welcome and heard. I admire her strength and character- what a beautiful woman inside and out.

My deepest condolences to Sharon's family and friends. I feel privileged to have met Sharon, as she truly was an amazing woman. I remember walking home from after meeting Sharon for the first time, beaming, because I had just met such an inspirational, strong woman. Although our encounter was brief, I instantly sensed her warmth, intelligence, and sense of humour. And she was so classy!

Through Shana's stories of her mum, I have also learned more about what a wonderful person Sharon was. The world is poorer without her.

May the loving memories of your mother, grandmother, and friend bring you comfort.

My deepest condolences to Leah and Shana. So hard to comprehend how this amazing and strong woman was taken from us. She always amazed me with her energy, strength, grace, humor, intelligence and beauty. I enjoyed when she would share her fascinating life stories.. she always told them with a glimmer in her eye and always mentioned her beautiful daughters and later her grandkids. She was an excellent and caring neighbor.
