Robert Buchalter Obituary

Robert Buchalter, M.D.

Memphis, TN

Robert Buchalter, M. D., noted Memphis psychiatrist, passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Germantown Methodist Hospital after a dignified battle with T- cell lymphoma. He was ten days shy of his 77th birthday. Dr. Buchalter closed his forty-six year psychiatry practice earlier this month.

Robert Buchalter was born on February 7th, 1940 in New York City, New York. He was the son of Sam and Doris Buchalter and moved to Memphis, his mother's hometown, when he was ten years old. He was salutatorian of White Station High School's first graduating class of 1957. He graduated from Memphis State University in 1960 and from University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1964, inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha.

He met his beloved wife, Beverly, in 1960 while playing bridge together in the Memphis State University Student Center. They married in June 1964 and lived in Washington, DC and Cincinnati for Dr. Buchalter's medical internship and psychiatric residency, respectively. He served as Chief Resident at Cincinnati General Hospital until 1968, when he volunteered for the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He treated veterans at Valley Forge Hospital in Phoenixville, PA.

After practicing psychiatry briefly in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Buchalter moved back to Memphis in 1971. He worked at both the VA Hospital and in private practice. During that time, he was affiliated with both Baptist and St. Francis Hospitals. He was a member of the Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society and the American Psychiatric Association.

While many will remember Dr. Buchalter for his caring professionalism, others know him as a competitive tennis player, avid golfer, world traveler, reader, and student of life.

He loved all his family. He is survived by Beverly Buchalter, his devoted and loving wife of fifty-two wonderful years. In addition, he leaves a son, Dr. David Buchalter, of Baltimore, MD and a daughter, Dr. Alison B. Segal, of Hartsdale, NY. He leaves daughter-in-law Allison H. Buchalter and son-in-law Jonathan Segal. He adored his 4 beautiful grandchildren – Zachary, Sophie, Dylan, and Ivy. He leaves five younger sisters: June B. Cohen (Richard) of Louisville, CO; Dr. Carol B. Stapp (Will) of Washington, DC; Ilene Buchalter Webber (Mel) of Denver, CO; Sharon Buchalter Shull (Steve) of Calabasas, CA; and Linda Overlie (Tim) of Boulder, CO. He remembered always his 8 nieces and nephews and 5 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be held at the Levy-Cooper Chapel in Temple Israel Cemetery, 1708 Hernando Rd., on Monday, January 30, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, The West Clinic, Temple Israel, or charity of your choice.

I just became aware of the death of Dr. Buchalter. I was a twenty one year old new graduate of Baptist School of Nursing, in 1975, when I met Dr. Buchalter . I was working on the Psych unit at Baptist Hospital. I learned so much from him. He was so very kind to his patients. I went on to become head nurse, psych instructor at BMHSON and Psych Staff Development Instructor, all at Baptist. He was always so kind and patient with his patients and the staff. I had the highest respect for him. I know the family still misses him but also know the wonderful memories you have of Dr. Buchalter help.

I still think of Dr. Buchalter to this day. He was such a wonderful doctor. I have looked for someone to fill his shoes but still to this day I am still looking. No one compared to him is available nor do I think I will ever find another doctor like him. Literally I am still looking.
A prayer for you, his wife and family is said today in memory of Dr. Buchalter. Bless you all.

When I first meet Dr Robert Buchalter 17 years ago. I knew he was the doctor I seriously needed in my life. He always knew what to say to me whenever I wanted to address anything that what was bothering me. His mannerism was excellent and you can definitely see that he was a great person deep inside. I truly value his opinion and he is definitely one of a kind. It is so hard to find another caring person like him. My heart and prayers goes out to The Buchalter's family. May God continue to carried each of you close to his heart.

I just recently learned about the passing of Dr.Buchalter from a mutual patient after returning from personal leave from my private practice after losing my own husband to sudden death. Dr. Buchalter and I shared many patients and many referrals over the years, and I held the upmost respect for him as a colleague and the incredible work he did with our patients. My heart goes out to his wife and family whom I never knew but certainly know their pain. May peace be in your hearts.

My name is Gloria Washington. I had the privilege of meeting Mr Buchalter and family at Baptist Hospital while being a caretaker for his mother Mrs. Doris Buchalter. Myself and 2 others took great joy in caring for Mrs Doris before she passed away. Such a nice and highly educated lady and the entire family as well.

Truely a small world, Dr Buchalter became my doctor in 2014 and still the pleasant person I remembered. He didn't remember me, and when I told him he smiled. He was glad to see me. Thanks so, so very much. May your soul and family be Blessed.

We knew Dr. Buchalter as "Carol's older brother" - the phrase with which his professor sister invoked him at the start of each new cohort of the Museum Education Program (MEP) at the George Washington University. His loving and abiding influence on Carol lives on through hundreds of MEP alum as they continue to pursue lofty goals for society.

Peace to all the family.

My family and I remember how kind Dr. Buchalter was and how much he loved his family. He always smiled whenever we saw him. My father fondly recalls joining him and other fathers for the father-daughter dance we had when his daughter Alison and I were in high school.
