Daniel Sprague Obituary

Sprague, Daniel T.
Daniel Thomas Sprague, age 49, of Silver Spring, MD died on August 29, 2015 in a motorcycle accident near his weekend home in Springfield WV. He is sorely missed by his wife, Joanne Pugh Sprague, son, Lucas Aiden Sprague age 10, his parents, William and Sally Sprague of Madison CT, his brother, David Sprague and family of Southport CT, his sister, Jane Jackson and family of Stratford CT, his in-laws, John and Mary Lou Pugh of Hollywood MD and their family, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and his beloved dogs, Aldo and Zoe. Dan was born in Danbury CT, spent his early years in Ridgefield CT and then Darien CT where he graduated from high school. During these early years he developed a keen interest in wildlife and nature working part time for a veterinarian and for an environmental conservation organization. During his college years he spent a summer and fall semester tending crops and livestock at the Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary located in Massachusetts near Walden Pond. Dan graduated from the University of Maryland in 1990 with a degree in Wildlife Management, was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, and worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. He served as the biologist at the early stages of Operation Migration's project to establish a second migratory flock of Whooping Cranes. The team's accomplishments are well known internationally and recorded in several documentaries. Dan later managed research and environmental studies laboratories for the Fish and Wildlife Service. He earned a Master's Degree in Biology from Towson University. Dan loved the outdoors. He, Joanne, and Luke took many camping and fishing trips together. He hunted deer with rifle, black powder, and bow and arrow. They were avid sports fans, attending many University of Maryland basketball games and Baltimore Ravens' football games, leading Luke's scouting troop, and coaching his basketball team. He came to faith in Christ at St Paul's Church, Darien CT, and was a member of Ashton Methodist Church in Sandy Spring MD. A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church, 135 Whitney Avenue, New Haven CT 06510 on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, checks made out to Lucas Sprague for his education fund may be sent to Wells Fargo Advisors, 450 Post Road East, Westport CT 06880.

Dan was a very competent, effective, and well-liked biologist at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, Maryland. Our whole Patuxent community will greatly miss him personally and professionally. The wildlife populations he studied and the professionals with whom he worked are all better off because of their association with Dan. We all are greatly sorry for his death and send our sympathy to his family.

With a broken heart on your behalf, Joann, Lucas, Sally and Bill, David, Jane and all family members, my prayers are with you. I pray the Lord holds you closer than ever before. I keep envisioning Dan joyously soaring with the Lord. May the Peace of God continue to reign in your hearts in the face of this tragic loss for mankind but tremendous gain for the King of Kings.

Bill, Sally, David, Jane and Joanne:

I have so many wonderful memories of Dan from youth group/high school. His sense of humor stands out to me. Dan had an uncanny ability to quote the dialogue from raunchy hit movies. One of our most recent communications included a quote from "The 40 Year Old Virgin." Dan was accusing me of being gay because I had liked Coldplay on my Facebook page!
I remember so poignantly how dearly he loved his son. I hope and pray that God raises someone up to walk along side Luke and watch raunchy movies with him like his Dad would have wanted to do.
I am sorry not to be able to be with you at Dan's memorial service. I may have been his youth group leader but I was given some much by having know him and watched him wrestle as a young man with his faith and life issues. I pray that each of you might be comforted in many ways during this time of grief.

Such a terrible loss. Dan was such a spitfire. May God bless his family, especially Joanne and Luke.
