Walter Czekaj Obituary

CZEKAJ Walter A. Czekaj, age 72, of Stratford, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2008 in Connecticut Hospice Branford. Walt was born in New York City to the late Joseph and Helen Gianotti Czekaj and has been a life long area resident. Football had played a big roll in the life of Walter A. Czekaj. Fortunately for Stratford High School, Walt's athletic career, his coaching prowess, and his devotion and caring as a health and physical education instructor, has made and even bigger impact on the lives of both students and athletes at his alma mater. Walt played four years of football, he competed in track and field for two years and he played basketball one year during his scholastic career from 1950-54. Selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Back Award in 1954, and the Thanksgiving Game MVP against Milford High, Czekaj then spent four years in the U.S. Army and captained the Army Airborne football team to a 9-1 record in 1955. He later played for the University of Bridgeport 1960-62, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in physical education. Prior to returning to Stratford High as assistant football coach in 1982, Walt initiated the football program at Norwalk Community College and he also coached football, wrestling, track and soccer at Brien McMahon, Norwalk and Trumbull high schools. The highly honored Czekaj turned a floundering SHS football program into one of the most respected in Connecticut during his 15year head-coaching career. Under Czekaj's astute leadership and skilled coaching, the Red Devils compiled a 117-44 record for a 73 percent winning record. After a 3-7rookie season, Czekaj guided SHS to fourteen straight winning seasons and five league titles. Stratford won Coastal Football Conference titles in 1986, 1988, 1989, 1992,1995. It also finished runner-up in the South West Conference in 1997 and 1998. Czekaj guided five teams to CIAC football playoffs with the 1986 (11-1), 1989(9-2) and 1992(10-1) clubs finishing runner-up. The school's crowning moment came in 1988 when the Red Devils went 10-1 and won the CIAC Class SS championship as well as the overall No. 1 ranking in both state polls. The founder of the Stratford wrestling program in 1985, Czekaj's teams carved out a 109-31-1 record in his 11-year tenure. During that span, Stratford won five consecutive CCIAC titles (1986-90) and added another in 1995. The Red Devils captured the CIAC Class M state championship in 1990 after a runner-up finish in 1989. Recognized by the Connecticut Coaches Association as its "Football Coach of the Year" in 1997 and in that year also received the National Football Foundations Lifetime Achievement Award. Walt is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Schaab Czekaj; his devoted children, Michael Czekaj of NYC, Pamela Scioletti and her husband, Maurice of Stratford, Kristen Heffernan and her husband, Daniel of Orange, and Jonathan Czekaj of New York City; three cherished grandsons, Aedan, Timothy and Maurice; and several nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday October 17th at 9 a.m. in St. James Church Stratford. Interment will be private. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations to Connecticut Hospice 100 Double Beach Road Branford, CT. 06405 or to a future award that will honor Coach Czekaj at SHS c/o Charles Senft 45 North Parade St Stratford, CT. 06615 For more information or to make an online condolence please visit www. adzimafuneralhome.com.

So saddened to hear of Coach Czekaj's passing. My brother and I fondly remember our last conversation with him on the sidelines last Thanksgiving in Strarford. We shared some great memories.
"Cocher's" influence will be passed on through countless generations. He taught and prepared his players well and on gameday he got out of the way and let them play. He took young men on adventures that went far beyond what they thought their limitations where. He modeled great character for all around him to follow. He was a sound leader and a gracious man, a winner in life.

My sincerest condolences to the entire Czekaj family. Please know that Coach was a great influence on my life and many others. My inspiration to coach others came from him and what he taught me. I beam with pride every time I see my former players teaching their players the same lessons Coach Czekaj taught me over 20 years ago. He always brought out the best in us and made us believe we were champions on and off the field. Coach's legacy will live forever because he has made a difference in so many of our lives. Thank you Coach! You will be missed.

Dear Nancy and family,

Both Marianne and I want to express our sincerest condolence to you and your family. I have always rememberd Walt as a guy who always gave it his all. As an SHS football teamate, I always remember him telling me "get me the ball first" before you do anything else. Based on what he did with his life, he always made sure the ball was in the right place in the lives of all that he touched.

Coach Czekaj was a great man. Though I was never officially coached by him (went to BHS), he saw me progress through the ranks in wrestling and he would come over to me (with being the coach of our rival school) at times after matches and would give me advice on what I did, win or lose-to better myself. Then after I graduated from hs, I met up with him and had the opportunity to talk to him about coaching. I must admit, the advice he gave me I still use to this day. I can honestly say that he has helped in the success of my team. He will always be remembered in this community for who he is and what he has done,forever.....

My deepest condolences to the Czekaj family. Coach was an outstanding teacher, mentor, and several sport coach. I always quote a few of his sayings to my classes each year. It was an honor to have played for him at SHS. Coach Czekaj will be missed, but his influence will remain for a long time.

Coach tried, with limited success, to teach me to throw baskets when I was a student at Wooster. I hated being in middle school. I was small, awkward, and teased often. When he offered me a chance to be wrestling manager my freshman year at Stratford, my life changed. I made more friends and had some upperclass guardian angels. I don't think he ever knew how much he and his actions meant to me.
Knowing that he was both a classmate and co-worker of my own Dad, I was fond of him even when he was my teacher of my most hated subject (till SHS). My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Czekaj family.

Czekaj Family: I want to express my sincere condolences to you at the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. Although I haven't seen most of you for some time, I still have many fond memories to look back upon. I will always remember Walt's (Big Walt) tolerance to all of the rock & roll that came blasting out of the music room behind the garage when you resided near the golf course. He truely was a "gentle giant".

Aunt Nancy and Family,

I am deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Uncle Walt. It was around this time of the year that I thought of him the most. I looked forward and will miss his call around Thanksgiving time. I found comfort and hearing his voice and seeing him especially after the loss of my mom. I can deeply sympathize with the pain of losing a loved one and the only comfort I could find was to remember those great memories that you shared together especially the ones that made you laugh. I will always remember him as a loving and caring person that was there when needed the most. My children will remember him as their Uncle who was a famous football player and coach. (esp. Mark Jr. who is really enjoying football this year and remembers having conversations with him about it) I will keep everyone in my prayers and hope that over time you will find peace and comfort in your heart.

With loving memories,

Theresa and Family
