John Barrington Obituary

John A. Barrington

87, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on May 28, 2013. He was a lifelong resident of Torrance where he resided with his wife of 60 years, Joyce. J.A. and Joyce had five children, Lesley, Claudia, Stacy (Greg), John (Maura) and Jay (Susan). Their family grew to include 13 grandchildren, Ryan (Lucy), Meghan (Brian), Katie, Kelli, Brittany (Matt), Taryn, Chandler, Bailey, Jamie, Michelle, Sarah, Jason and Bradley; along with 8 great grandchildren, Meadow, Geneveve, Layla, Mallory, Michael, Zoey, Jameson and Claire. J.A. had a strong sense of community service, which started with being ASB President at Torrance High. He graduated from U.C. Berkley ROTC and entered the Navy as a Lieutenant JG. He joined the family International Oil Tool business and served as President for nearly 60 years. During this time he did an amazing amount of community service. He served as President of Torrance Kiwanis Club. He was President and a Team Manager at Torrance Central Little League. He was the President of Virginia Country Club. He was also President of the Board of Directors at Torrance Memorial Medical Center and served as a volunteer administrator of the hospital for ten months. He was instrumental in the relocation and expansion of the hospital from its original site in Old Torrance to its present location. He also served as a Board Member for Sumitomo and South Bay Banks and North Del Amo Pacific Co-op. He received the Torrance Chamber's Distinguished Citizen Award in 1972 and the Sertoma Award of Merit. His home received the City's Most Beautiful Home Award in 1978. Through his efforts he made a difference in thousands of people's lives. A memorial service will be held at Green Hills on Wednesday, June 5 at 1 PM. To the Barrington family:
As a fellow member of the Torrance Memorial (THIPA) Senior Advisory Board,I only met John once, but all of us admire him for all the work he did through the years to help make TMMC what it is today. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
