Inez Starr Obituary

Inez Starr of West Chester Inez Starr was born on July 14, 1942 and died Oct. 13, 2010. Inez proudly grew up in the Bronx in N.Y. She graduated with a master's of fine arts from Pratt Institute and a B.S. in fine arts from Skidmore College. Inez retired from William Penn High School in 2004 as art department chair after a 27 year teaching career. Inez received Pennsylvania's prestigious Outstanding Educator Award in 2002. She impacted many students' lives by passionately educating them in the field of "high" art and mentoring them toward professional and college careers in the arts. Inez will be remembered by her students for such phrases as "Frame it!"; "Work the whole page!"; and "It will be a happening!". Inez exhibited her own art collections throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware in various museums, galleries and colleges. Over the years, she also taught many artists in her home studio. Inez believed that everyone had artistic ability that needed to be expressed. Inez's legacy as an artist and educator will live on through the students and artists she inspired with her wisdom, passion, and artistic insight. She is survived by her three children, three grandchildren and her mother still living in Bronx, N.Y. Inez's funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24, at Beth Moses Cemetery in Long Island, N.Y.

Inez was a beloved mentor, a lifeline in my high school days, and beyond. Her compassion, honesty and unconditional support and the impact she had on my journey will always be treasured. Even today I feel her loss. Rest in peace, Inez. Namaste.

Ms. Starr always made me feel like there was no wrong or right in my interpretation and expression. She never criticized, second-guessed or squashed my process or manner of going about things. She was all about the journey of self-discovery - nourishing it and gently guiding one along the way. She had a way of actively engaging my teenage mind so as to make me feel worthy as not only an artist in my own right but as a person, too. She spoke to me as if we were peers, which always meant a lot to me. I'm a career-switcher now, switching to a career in middle school education. She is my inspiration in this process. If I could be just 50% of what she was to me I will consider myself lucky. She is a part my past, my today, and my tomorrow. She will be missed!

Ms. Starr was a great mentor. She believed in my abilities as an artist even when I doubted myself. She was a true motivator and loving caring person. When I felt like nothing was right in my life I could always find a safe haven in the art room and comfort from all of the activity there. Ms. Starr was an excellent artist and instructor. I will never forget her!
