Samuel Holmes Jr.

SURRY - Samuel Holmes Jr., 63, entered eternal rest on Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at Southside Regional Medical Center. He was born July 6, 1941, in Surry County to Gracie E. Holmes and the late Samuel Holmes Sr. of Waverly. He retired from Newport News Shipyard and Drydock Company after 24 years. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Leon Holmes. Left to cherish his memories, two daughters, Gwen H. Brown (Anthony) and Lisa D. Tyler (Glen), all of Surry County; three sons, Reginald Holmes (Nadine) of Petersburg, Stefan Walter of Norfolk and Eric B. Holmes of Hopewell; a devoted mother, Gracie E. Holmes of Waverly; four brothers, William Holmes (Edith) of Dendron, Thomas Holmes of Waverly, Leroy Holmes (Byrdie) of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Stanley Holmes Sr. (Irene) of Newport News; four sisters, Mary C. Wise of Baltimore, Md., Jennie H. Spratley of Detroit, Mich., Earnestine White (Robert) of Waverly, and Beatrice Shaw (James) of Dendron; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one aunt, Mary Price of New Jersey; a devoted ex-wife, Pauline H. Tabb of Dendron; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at Jerusalem Baptist Church with Pastor Hallie Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Chappell-Holmes Family Cemetery. Viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Poole's Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Arrangements by Poole's Funeral Home, Sabrina Hardy Funeral Director.
