Albert Patrick Obituary

HAMPTON - Albert Woodfin "Pat" Patrick III, passed away on October 9, 2017 due to complications from open heart surgery. Pat was born on May 18, 1951 to the late Woody and Ida Patrick. Pat was a lifelong resident of Hampton having attended Hampton Public Schools and graduating from Hampton High School in 1969, the University of Virginia in 1973 and he received his Law Degree from the University of Virginia in 1976. Pat practiced law in the City of Hampton from 1976 to 1995 when he was elected judge of the Hampton General District Court. While Pat enjoyed the practice of law, he loved being a judge in Hampton. Judge Patrick strived to be fair and impartial and to treat all parties with dignity and respect. Whether it was a hardened criminal, a first time traffic offender or an unrepresented civil litigant, those who came before him received his attention. Very active in the Hampton community, Pat had served on the Hampton School Board for ten years being the Chairman for seven of those years. He was also the president of the Virginia State School Boards Association and was elected to the Board Directors of the National School Boards Association. Pat previously served as Chairman of the Hampton YMCA and was a former Chairperson for the Hampton Baptist Church Board of Deacons. Pat was always involved in athletics being the captain of the 1969 Hampton High School Crabber State Championship basketball team. When his playing days were over he refereed high school basketball for over twenty years being selected to officiate six state championship games. Pat was very active with the Hampton Wythe Little League as a player, coach, umpire, announcer and concessionaire. Pat watched all five of his children pass through Hampton Wythe Little League but his biggest claim to fame is being the assistant coach to his wife, Jerri, who won two straight A-League championships against the likes of Henry Morgan, Bobby Quinn and Clark Walden. Pat remained a loyal "assistant coach" to Jerri for the remainder of his life. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Jerri; his children, Woody(Cameron), Jason, Molly, Chance and Dallas. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Ellie and Leta. He is also survived by his sisters Eleanor Patrick Maloney (David), and Elizabeth Patrick Heath (Skeeter) as well as a numerous other relatives of the Patrick clan. A memorial service will be conducted at Hampton Baptist Church at 11:00 am, on Friday, October 13, 2017 by the Rev. Charles Smith. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5-7 pm at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton. Interment will be private. Pat had requested that if you wish to make a donation in his memory to make it to either the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Rusty and I celebrated our 20th Wedding Anniversary just before Christmas - Pat was so kind to officiate. Any day that included Pat was special, but having him seal our commitment in the presence of our children and friends was a gift. His smile always made me realize that every moment is special. I still expect to see him behind me at the grocery store.

Patrick I think about you often. You meant so much to me as my lawyer... The things I learned from you are still with me today. You are admired and I only wish I stayed in closer contact with you. Forever I am grateful to you.

So sorry to read about Pet's passing. I played against him my senior year at James Blair in basketball. I am a lawyer and appeared before him in general district court a few years ago at which time we briefly reminisced about our playing days joking that it was "In another life." Prayers to the family.

I'm not sure if you will received this, but I wanted to send my condolences just in case. I worked as an Animal Control Officer in the city of Hampton for two year and left in July 2017. I was heart broken to hear of Judge Patrick's passing. He was my favorite Judge! I loved going to court when he was working! Not only did he take animal cases seriously, but he would always joke around with us officers after everyone has left! He ALWAYS made my day when he was there!! I will forever regret not spending more time talking with him and I will always remember his humor and wisdom!
I am so sorry for your loss.

I learned today of your passing from my Mom and am so very saddened by the news. As a family, we attended every HHS basketball game when you, Judge Patrick played, and were present the day the team won the Championship! I remember you so excited coming right up into the stands to see your Dad first and thanking everyone sitting in that section for the support. I, a young girl in the 7th grade got a kiss on the cheek from the star basketball player that day! My 1st school girl crush! But what I will remember the most about this man is his warm and friendly smile he greeted every one with....he always always had one!
May you rest in peace Pat, and may your family and loved ones find peace and comfort in all the wonderful memories of you! God bless!

I am deeply sadden to learn about the passing of Judge Patrick. He was one of the finest Judges who I have ever known and a role model for all of us. I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Our twin sons met Judge Patrick at Hampton Roads Academy on March 16, 2013 when he was the keynote speaker at the school's Leadership Institute. The impact he had on them was immediate. Every time we saw him from then on, it was like seeing a rock star. Whether at the corner 7-11, walking his dog in the neighborhood, or having dinner at Vancosta's, whenever we saw Judge Patrick their eyes would widen and they'd say, "There he is." It just goes to show how he truly touched so many lives, and how thankful we are that our boys can be counted among them. May prayers of comfort, strength, and peace surround his friends and family now and always. - Denine and Doug Miller

We add our heartfelt condolences to the many already stated for the loss of this vibrant, funny, wonderful man. He joined our children in marriage at the UVA Chapel over nine years ago, and did some mean dirty dancing with Jerri to celebrate the occasion!
We shall never forget him or his kindness. May his memory be for a blessing.

We are still at a loss that Pat has passed
away. He was a powerful spirit and could always light up a room. No one was more committed to his family, friends and community. There was never anything that Pat would not do for another person. We will miss him immensely. Heaven has gotten a little better!

I knew Pat at Thorpe Jr. HS and as a fellow member of HHS Class of 1969, where he was a smart, high-spirited,and friendly person, president of the class and captain of the State Championship basketball team that year. He was a vigorous young man, full of life, and his father Woody, himself a forceful presence at basketball games, was the busy proprietor of the family hardware store on Queen Street, a local institution. They seemed to know everyone in town. Though I moved away from Hampton after college, my husband and I often returned and we sought Pat's legal advice when he was an attorney in Hampton in the early nineties; he was genuinely kind and considerate, and really helpful. I remember him fondly, and regret his loss; he is admirable.

There will never ever be another Pat Patrick!!! As a child i looked up to him on the baseball field at Hampton Wythe Little League and as a Hampton Police Officer I looked up to him even more. There was always a sense of relief hearing the baliff say all rise and then see Judge Patrick enter the courtroom. He was such a wonderful caring man. He never belittled anyone in court and was especially kind and patient with new officers and new attorneys. Whenever a mistake was made during someone's testimony he always had a smile that made you realize that you were gonna be ok. He didnt have to be tough and abrasive to run his courtroom; he showed respect and it was given back tenfold. Loved seeing him and some of the veteran attorney's cutting up ( Burcher, Boester etc...). Im so honoroed to have known Pat my entire life and am so grateful to have spent the last 13 years as a Hampton Police Officer testifying in his courtroom. The judge who takes his spot (and im not even saying replaced because he can never be replaced) is going to have impossible shoes to fill. Prayers go out to his family. Truly saddened by his passing

Pat was a fun-loving man whom we met through our son, Kes, who played summer baseball in Hampton. Pat and Jerri opened their home and took care of our son and we love them for that. Pat was an incredible man - always so happy and optimistic. We are better people for having known him. We look forward to seeing him again in Heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jerri, Molly, and the boys. Love to you all!

There are no words to describe the loss of Pat Patrick. He was definitely the kindest and most warm hearted person and community advocate that I have ever known. He coached my son and grandson in Little League. There is no other that can fit in his shoes. God has an Angel like no other. Rest in peace as we try to accept you being taken so soon. Hampton will miss you!

How we will miss your face.... Turning around and seeing you just standing there, always ready to join our celebrations and cheer, no matter how small the victory -- always ready to share and support through the hard times, no matter how big. So many of the moments of our lives include your presence, so many of our memories were possible because of you.

My favorite Pat story: When I told Russell I might remarry he said to 'call Pat. He got you out of one mess, might as well get you into the next!" You thought it was funny especially because of how many messes you got HIM out of!

Thank you so much for your role modeling for my son, for your never-failing care for the wellbeing of so many of us. I miss you already!

October 12, 2017

This was some sad news. Never once did I appear in Judge Patrick's Court that it wasn't a happy occasion. Regardless of the result, the facts, the client or my approach. He had the quick wit of a stand up comic and a judicial appreciation of life's mistakes that was both empathetic and fair to a fault. I will never again enter that courthouse with a smile in his honor; the same smile I would wear when I would open the doors and see him on the bench.
I truly regret not knowing him better. I know he will be missed by every lawyer in Tidewater. My prayers go out to his beautiful and loving Family.

To the Patrick Clan,

So many people are hurting today, as Kathy and I are. Please accept my sincere condolences for a life cut too short.

I knew Pat for almost 60 years. The accolades pouring in for him are all so wonderful, I could not add anything above what folks have already said. I'll add a story that many of you can relate to.

I was at "Coach Mike's" house with Pat, Mike, and Mike's younger sister Lyn. We were playing H-O-R-S-E. As you would imagine, I was first out, Mike was next, which left Pat and Lyn. WELL WELL, Lyn won, which surprises no one. That was at 5:30 one evening. Then next came 2 outta 3. We decided first out was eliminated; so Mike, Pat, and Lyn were playing. Mike was out next, left Pat and Lyn. Well, Lyn WON. So imagine what was next, Pat wanted 3 outta 5, then 4 outta 7. At 9:00 it was so dark, we had to stop, because this young lady needed to get to bed, and ready for school. Coach Mike came out, and Pat begged him to let her stay; Coach just looked at Pat and told him "it's over, accept it, and get in the gym and practice, maybe next time that girl wont beat you", coach Mike said in his soft manner (and with a smile). I think Lyn beat him 6 times straight, and he refused to lose; but, I know he was Lyn's biggest fan. Competitive !

Everyone has a story about Pat........

I hadn't seen Pat in a good while, but I will always remember our time together. Memories will live on, a legend has been created, and because of Pat, I have called, texted friends, and have reached out to long-time friends to tell them how much I miss and love them. Sorry Pat, I missed sending that message to you. In his honor, call, text, send a letter, and reach out to friends............. Skeeter, I still love you son, and Michael Thomas Joseph Anastasio, cheers to the memory of PAT ! ! ! ...cam

I am a member of the 1969 graduating class at Hampton High and I was sorry to hear of Pat's death. Thinking of Pat today. We loved his warm smile, compassion for others, his love for his family and friends. Pat was also a leader. He lead his team to the state championship in 1969. Through all the trials and tribulations Pat faced he did so with a great sense of humor and grace. We are all blessed to have known him. Let's all try to smile when we think of Pat. That is what he would expect. I thank God for making Pat a part of my life.

I knew of Par for years since I grew up in Hampton and went to Hampton High. I am so sorry to hear the news. What an inspiration he is --he inspires all to be "better than ourselves".

What a wonderful man. Pat was so supportive of all the activities at HHS during my tenure and especially to the girls' field hockey where his daughter, Molly played. Molly and family my heart is broken. He will be sorely missed. My prayers are with each of you.

I was a sophomore when Pat graduated from Hampton High School. I enjoyed watching him play basketball and later I officiated basketball games with him. He was a great person. I'm sure his family will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Prayers for all the Patrick clan. I knew Pat from elementary school through graduation and into adulthood. He was the most kind, caring compassionate man I've ever known. He was always a leader among men. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I have never heard an unkind word spoken of him. Rest in peace Pat.

I offer my deepest condolence and know that Pat is now among the Angels. While I was in law enforcement Pat was one of the finest men I had the honor to know as a Judge and as a friend when ever we met outside the courtroom. Rest in Peace.

Some people come into our lives, leave their footprints on our hearts, and we are never the same. Judge Patrick has been a big part of my life for many years, as his clerk and as his friend. I will never forget his big heart, he loved his clerk's office family. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
