Harry Haskell Obituary

Harry G. Haskell Jr.

Harry G. Haskell Jr. (Hal), former Mayor of Wilmington, Del., died on January 16, 2020, at the age of 98. Enjoying one last holiday visit from his big, loud, loving family helped him finally let go. Hal and his wife Mimi had eight children, 19 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. They were married for 61 years. She, like Hal, was generous in her private and public life. Together they were energetic, mischievous, and shared a great sense of humor. After Mimi died in 2008, he reconnected with an amazing childhood friend, Ruth du Pont Lord. They were devoted partners until Ruth died in 2014.

Hal attended Tower Hill School, St. Mark's School in Mass., and Princeton University, which he left in 1942 to enlist in the US Coast Guard where he spent time in the Atlantic doing off-shore anti-submarine patrol and then in the Pacific on an LST until the end of the war.

Hal began his business career as president of Greenhill Dairies in 1948 and later was president and chairman of the board at Abercrombie and Fitch, a company that reflected his sportsmanship and love of the outdoors. Surpassing even his interest in business were his commitments to public service and philanthropy. Hal's political career began with the support of his friend and colleague, Nelson Rockefeller, and involved work in the Department of Housing, Education, and Welfare under President Eisenhower. During his one term as Delaware's only member of the US House of Representatives ('57-'59), Hal was proudest of building bipartisan backing for student loan and air traffic control legislation.

When Hal was Mayor of Wilmington he was most admired for his efforts to ease racial tension in the city following the riots that had been sparked by the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hal, along with Governor Russ Peterson, ended the National Guard's occupation, which had been one of the longest in American history. He valued honesty in politicians and a willingness to compromise, and he often praised the people of Delaware for electing reasonable leaders from both parties.

Just as important to Hal was his advocacy for environmental stewardship and increased access to quality education. He was a founding member of Chadds Ford's Brandywine River Museum and Conservancy and served on the board for more than 50 years. In 1969, Hal and two friends started Dynamy, a program in Worcester, Mass. designed to empower young people to discover their purpose. He took aspects of this program and, with the help of local leaders, founded Delaware Futures to mentor and support at-risk students for college. In the last two years of his life, the cause he pursued most passionately was bold investment, both public and private, in early childhood education.

His service will be held at Christ Church in Greenville, Del. on Monday, Jan. 27 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Delaware Futures. 1104 N Adams St, Wilm, DE 19801

To the Haskell family, my most sincere and deepest prayers that this past year has gone well with you. A sense of loss lingers still but the strength and character with which your father raised you will provide the needed stamina to rise above your emotion, especially on those dark nights when you hear a word, a phrase, or just a thought that brings him back for just a moment, to continue the stewardship of the world he cared for so much. A world he made an mark in for ever.

My uncle, Hilton Ramsey, was a man who made you earn his respect and I feel safe in saying that he and your father shared a mutual respect; a friendship that must still exist on a Pheasant shoot somewhere.

Uncle Hal, as I knew him, made an indelible impression on me as a young teen when I first met him and his oldest son, Kim, in the early 1960s. Larger than life in so many ways, Hal embraced life with such gusto and good humor. He managed to inculcate those same aptitudes in all of his children, and I imagine, his and Mimi's many grandchildren. My father, a close friend of Hal's, took me along on several father/son outings with Hal and Kim, memories I cherish to this day. Whether it was tarpon fishing at Boca Grande, quail hunting at Hal and Mimi's North Carolina farm, driving his aqua-car through the pond at their farm at Chadd's Ford, or hanging out at David Rockefeller's house on St. Bart's when the island was a backwater, those halcyon days were filled with laughter and an amazing sense of camaraderie. I am so much the better person for having had Hal in my life. I treasure our relationship, and I hope Hal's kids and grandkids take special joy in their endless reminiscences of their time with the one and only Hal Haskell.

Hal Haskell was a very special individual with an unmatched love for his country, state and, especially his city. He wanted to help disadvantaged young people have the opportunity for higher education and a brighter future....and he did. He had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. His support helped launch my political 'career' and I am grateful to have known him.

Had I known of your passing sooner, I would have been in attendance at the service. The Mayor, as I'll always remember you, was my boss from 1969 through 1972. You were a leader of the first order and a friend.

The Callaghan family is saddened to hear of the loss of your father. My grandmother Gladys had the privilege of working with him in Congress, as Mayor, and with Abercrombie & Fitch. We thank him for his service and his generosity to all. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family. RIP Hal Haskell.

I will be forever grateful to you Dad. Because of his generosity, I was able to attend the University of Delaware and receive a degree in Mechanical Engineering. As I told him when I last saw him at your Mothers Memorial Service, in his honor I have payed forward and helped some less fortunate young people to attend college. Unfortunately, my wife has health issues and I will not be able to attend the Memorial Service. Your Mom and Dad were great people and i had the good fortune to grow up on Hill Girt Farms and know them.

Hal was a great friend to the Carpenter family in North Carolina having hunted with my father Joe Carpenter since Hal was 14 years old. Hal loved the outdoors and was an advocate for environmental and recreational issues for years before it became popular. He was a generous, caring, and optimistic person. Hal was a true statesman with his political endeavors and community work. My condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed!
