Nicholas Vouras Obituary

Nicholas "Nick" Vouras

Wilmington - Nicholas Vouras passed away March 8th after a courageous battle with heart disease and diabetes. Born June 24, 1939 in Wilmington, he was the son of John and Evokia Vouras, owners of the original Kozy Korner Restaurant on Delaware Avenue in Wilmington. Like all Greek children of that generation, he worked in the family business. He was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School and the University of Delaware, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He took over the family business in 1964, upon the death of his father. In the late 80s, the Kozy Korner was closed for the building of a hotel. Nick kept busy as owner of Mom's Smoke Shop and Forwood Construction. He was also on the Board of Directors of Ninth Ward Savings & Loan Association. In 1993, he reestablished the Kozy Korner at its current location on Union Street. Many people remember fondly his voicemail during the long renovation process. He was "on a mission." Nick was also very involved with Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Wilmington, where he served on the Parish Council, including as President, on the Endowment Fund Committee, and General Chairman of the Greek Festival for many years. He was also active in the Order of AHEPA, serving as President and multiple terms as Treasurer. He was a Grand Master of the Masons and was an avid supporter of the Odyssey Charter School. As recently as last week he was saying he could not wait to get out of the hospital to help raise funds for the school. Nick was predeceased by his parents and his sisters Venetia and Connie, and his niece Terry Snyder. He is survived by his brother Edward of Wilmington, son John and his wife Leticia, daughter Lydia and her husband Glenn Bark. He is also survived by two grandsons Nicholas and Alexander, and cousin Tom Laskaris and his wife Mary. Friends may call at 10am Wednesday, March 14th at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom Street in Wilmington followed by the funeral service at 11am. Interment will be at Silverbrook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Nick's memory to the Odyssey Charter School, Barley Mill Plaza, 4319 Lancaster Pike, and Wilmington, DE 19805. Nick,
It was great knowing you, you (explainative). It took a while to get used to the sarcasms. But then we exchanged them feely and always in a jovial manner. We solved more problems over coffee than than all the world leaders combined!!!
Rest In Peace you (explanative

We always enjoyed talking with Nick at the restaurant. It is one of the few family
owned places with old school standards still open. Nick ran a tight ship and was a treasure. You could count on him for an honest opinion! He'll be missed. My husband and I send our heart felt condolences.

Sandi and I send our "prayers for the peace that passeth understanding" for all in Nick's family.

Although we'd met previously, it was in the last 25 years that I'd gotten to know Nick, and John, as work took me into town for breakfast meetings at Kozy Korner.

And, when I began to attend the Trinity Greek Festival, where Nick seemed to be "Mayor"...

Well, I just grew in a sense of attachment to Nick, almost as I might have with my own father, if he'd lived that long (he died at 60)...

I always enjoyed a quick chat with Nick, whatever the topic, and he never failed in a bit of that "Greek Diner Impressario 'Edge'" -- with which so many friends were targeted.

I'll miss Nick, he was a really good man, and he left a great legacy. Condolences to the family.

We were so saddened when we heard the news the other day. Nick was a challenging and supportive friend. He pushed you to do your best, but also complimented you on your successes. I will miss my early Sunday morning visits with him. Small coffee, 2 creams, 1 sweetener. May his memory be eternal.
