Elizabeth Fitzsimmons Obituary
Des Moines
Elizabeth "Betty" Ruth Barton Fitzsimmons died in Des Moines, Iowa on August 29, 2016. She was born in Vermilion, South Dakota on April 1, 1926.
Betty received her B.F.A. in Studio Art (1948) and M.A. in Painting (1968) from the University of Iowa. She was a prolific painter and sculptor and her works were exhibited in various places all over the state.
Betty taught art at the Des Moines Art Center, the Des Moines Public Schools, Glenwood Hospital School, the Inner City Art Program and Forest Avenue Public Library.
She volunteered in the public library of every community where she and her family lived, at the Iowa Homeless Youth Drop-in Center and the Housing Task Force of the Metro Des Moines League of Women Voters. She was a strong supporter of Iowa Public Radio and organizations that advocate social justice and human rights, the environment and other progressive causes.
Betty is survived by children Dan and his wife Sandra, Kathy, Mike and his wife Gwen, grandson Matt, great-grandson Holsten and her best friend and soul-sister Charlotte Nelson.

to Betty's family, I helped Betty at the homeless youth shelter, she was great to be around, we had many discussions centered around our same beliefs, and causes. She will be missed by all who knew her.
