Joann Morrison Slay Obituary

Joann Morrison Slay
February 25, 1926 - April 21, 2021
Grapevine, Texas - Joann Morrison Slay (95) of Grapevine, Texas went to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 21, 2021.
She is survived by her children, Alice Oldham of North Richland Hills, Elizabeth Ann Laymance (James) of Ft. Worth, Ray C. Slay, III (Chrissey) of Los Angeles, CA.; daughter-in-law, Pamela (Hill) Slay of Los Angeles, CA.; her brother, Ray "Sock" Manning Morrison of Carrollton, KY.; as well as seven grandchildren, Melissa Gaby, Jacquelyn Christine Huse, Adam Oldham, Meryl Slay, MacKenzie Bergeron, Sabrina Slay and Jake Slay, eight great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Cleveland, Oklahoma, Joann was the third of Tascar Bruce and Rose Leona Elizabeth (Eberle) Morrison's four children. The only daughter, Joann absolutely adored her brothers and proudly claimed to have had a large hand in raising the youngest, "Sock."
Graduating from Norman High School (1944), Joann also attended Hominy High School where she played in the school's band, sang in the Glee Club and was a "Gingersnap" on the school's inaugural pep squad. After graduation, she married her husband of 48 years, Ray C. Slay, Jr. settling in Ft. Worth to raise their three children. Ray and Joann eventually moved to Haltom City where Joann spent the next 60 years welcoming generations of her family into her home, her greatest joy.
For 35 years, Joann worked as a medical transcriptionist for Radiology Associates, but her true vocation was divine. For well over 70 years, Joann served as a bible teacher, holding weekly classes at Browning Heights Presbyterian, and then went on to teach patients in the memory care unit at Dancing River Assisted Living where she resided for the last four years. Her passion for the Lord was voracious, authoring four self-published books that chronicled her experiences with the divine.
She led countless volunteer efforts, serving her church and her community, though the most impactful was her involvement with the Victory Missions of America, a non-denominational, non-profit organization that shares the Gospel and plants churches in Colombia. Through Victory Missions, Joann was able to successfully place over 200 Colombian children with families in the United States.
As her family and friends mourn the loss of their beloved Joann, they are comforted to "know that in all good things God works for the good of those who love him and who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28
Joann was preceded in death by her husband, Ray C. Slay, Jr.; her parents, Tascar and Rose (Eberle) Morrison; and her brothers, Basil Roland Morrison and Bruce Fleming Morrison.
Those who knew and loved Joann Morrison Slay are invited to her Memorial Service on Saturday, April 24 beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Mount Olivet Chapel in Fort Worth. There will be a reception to follow with location information distributed at the service.
The family has requested that Memorial Contributions be made to Christian Community Storehouse in Keller, Texas.

My daughter Beth Anne remembers Joann as "the lady with the camera who told us where to stand; she was nice." This was when we were attending the reunions hosted by my parents in the 1980s, when Beth Anne was in grade school. Joann renewed the family reunions in the 1990's and checked on family members in between. We all will miss her tart humor, firm, loving spirit and evening phone calls. I am sorry I couldn't join you at the service. I was trying to complete the requested information, but cousin once removed wasn't in the list of
relationships. My mother and Joann were first cousins.

Ray and Family,
My heart goes out to you for the loss of your Mother.
Ray, you and I went to school together and were friends in high school. I would love to talk with you and catch up.
Again, my prayers are with you and your family in this most difficult time.
