Ann Entis Obituary

ENTIS Ann J. Entis, 79, of Port Charlotte, Florida, formerly of Marysville, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, April 4 at the Tidewell Hospice and Palliative Care in Port Charlotte. She was born on Long Island, NY on September 21, 1927, spent her early years there, then moved to Marysville, Ohio in 1956 where she lived most of her adult life before retiring to Florida with her husband ten years ago. She was a member of the Marysville Methodist Church. Ann was a professional sculptor, receiving her formal art education at New York's prestigious Art Students League, The Sculpture Center of Greenwich Village, and in Mexico. In Marysville she established her own sculpture studio and quickly gained a national reputation. Her specialty was children, and many of her commissions were for schools, churches, libraries and other institutions. Her work is in collections in every state, and many foreign countries. One of her works is in the White House, another in the Ohio Governor's Mansion. She has lectured and written many magazine and newspaper articles on sculpting. For several years she introduced children to sculpting as part of Ohio's Artist-in-Schools program. Ann was a member of Ohio Designer Craftsmen, American Artisans Guild, American Craft Council, Columbus Art League, Springfield Art League, Licking County Art League, Mansfield Art League, Marysville Art Association and The National Sculpture Society. She retired from full-time sculpting in 1996 and moved to Riverwood in Port Charlotte with her husband. There she was able to pursue her passion for bicycling and kayaking, both replacements for her daily horseback riding workouts in Ohio with her favorite mare and the two foals she helped deliver and train. She was a member of the Coastal Cruisers Bike Club, and a co-founder, with her husband, of the Riverwood Eating & Biking Society (REBS). She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Wyn; her daughter, Chris (Marty) Lagod of Atherton, Calif.; her son, Glenn (Maria) Entis of Vancouver, British Columbia; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Cassandra and Zachary Lagod, Laura and Katherine Entis; several nieces and nephews and many close friends. There will be no scheduled memorial service, in accordance with her wishes. A private family service will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to either the Duke University Brain Tumor Center, DUMC Box 3624, Durham, NC 27710 or to the Tidewell Hospice and Palliative Care, 1144 Veronica St., Port Charlotte, FL 33952. Arrangements are by LARRY TAYLOR FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, Punta Gorda.

I was just looking at one of Ann’s sculptures and thinking about her. I decided to google her name to see where she is and found this obituary. She certainly left a wonderful legacy. She will live on in many homes and important places, including ours. We have 10 of her sculptures. Now she is among the angels, like the ones she made each Christmas.

Mr. Entis,
I just got off the phone with Chris but I also wanted to let you know how much I have always thought of you and Mrs. Entis. Please know that I wish you the best.

Wyn, I am sorry to hear of Ann's death. I regret losing contact. When I went back into parish work I lost touch with most of my friends from when I was teaching at St. Charles and involved with Winterfair. Both of you were and are in my thoughts and prayers. I treasure the pieces I have of Ann's and the fond memories of your friendship. Many friends have been asking if I knew where Ann and you were. May God be with you in this difficult time. Love and prayers, Harry Schneider

I first met Ann more than 30 years ago at an art show. She was a gracious and very talented lady. I have many of her sculptures and treasure each and every one. She did a very special piece for me when I had my twin sons. I will think of her fondly every time I look at them.

We have many fond memories of Ann through the years. We cherish the memories of being your neighbors, co-worker and friends in Marysville. The times spent with Ann with her horses and the memorable rides with her are always with me (Ruth Ann). We feel honored to have one of her acclaimed sculpures that she made especially for us. We feel sadened that her presious and active life with us has closed. Wyn, we will keep you in our prayers that God will give you strength and peace through family and friends in days to come.
