Robert Sharples Obituary

Robert T. Sharples, age 70, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at ForestView Health Care Center at Springhill. "Bob," as he was lovingly known to friends and family, was born in Throop, Pa. on May 18 in 1944. He was a graduate of Tech Memorial High School, and a long-time employee in the Composing Room at the Erie Times-News.

Bob was fiercely proud of his family. He spoke often of their many personal accomplishments, and took great pride in the kind, loving people they are today. He will be especially missed by his wife and companion, Kathy; daughter, Lisa; and son, Rob; and his five grandchildren. He loved taking pictures at family events, sometimes capturing hundreds of memories on his camera. He was overwhelmed with love from his immediate and extended family and friends to celebrate his 70th birthday in May.

Bob was an avid and talented bowler for many years, an occasional golfer, and a skilled handyman. More than anything, Bob loved to read anything he could get his hands on. He had a daily habit of reading the Erie Times-News and USA Today cover-to-cover, and had devoured a library's worth of books in his lifetime. His Kindle and a large pile of books were never far from his bedside, and he was known to read entire books in a day. Bob had an acute appreciation for history and politics, having served many hours as a dedicated volunteer during the 2008 presidential campaign, during which he was honored to meet President Obama.

Despite his many years of health struggles, Bob always had a sharp mind, determined spirit, and timely sense of humor. He was stoic in his battles to overcome illnesses, a reminder to all of us to appreciate our own health and good fortunes. His family is grateful for the excellent care and compassion he received from his team of health care professionals, including Dr. McAllister, Dr. Mercado, Dr. Nadworny, and the wonderful staff of ForestView.

Bob is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 49 years, Kathleen "Kathy" (Behringer) Sharples. He is also survived by his mother, Justine Sharples of Waterford, Pa.; his daughter, Lisa Sorensen (husband, Terry); son, Robert "Rob" (wife, Carol) of Girard, Ohio; five grandchildren, Abby, Nicholas, Scott, Matthew, and Katie; four sisters, Justine Schultz, Dolores Fox, Elaine Kolski, and Jean Sharples; two brothers, James and Paul Sharples; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Sharples; and his brother, Thomas Sharples.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend a Prayer Service there on Saturday at 10:15 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. David Laakso. Interment will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 1001 State St., Suite 502, Erie, PA 16501, or to a charity of one's choice.

Bob Sharples was a work colleague who became a great friend. What was unusual about our friendship was that we worked at cross-purposes: He was the Times-News composing-room foreman, and I edited Showcase. It was my job to make the magazine as mistake-free as possible; his job was to get it out the door as fast as possible. Somehow, we did both pretty frequently. Unlike some bosses, who find saying no or "it can't be done" too easy, Bob always championed the POSSIBILITY of doing it. And damn, if he didn't do it! But that was Bob -- the smartest guy in the room and the busiest, because he really couldn't delegate tasks very well; he had to do them all by himself. Just as I miss the good ole days at the paper (wow, I'm really sounding like an old retired guy!), I'll miss my friend Bob, and I hope that his dear wife, Kathy, can patch together all the memories in this guest book as well as her own to help cushion the blow of losing such a vital guy.

I was so sad to hear of Bob's passing, what a wonderful family man and all around good guy. Loved hearing all the stories of the many, many accomplishments of his whole family while cutting his hair, and what great hair! Thinking of you Cathy, Lisa and Rob and knowing he's watching over you smiling.

You were the best grandfather and grandson could ever ask for. You are the reason I am half the man I am today. The memories I hold of you are not moments that any picture or video camera could capture and have the same meaning. I just wish I had more time with you. Thank you for teaching me how to be a man, showing me the Yankees, taking me to Yankee stadium, teaching me the crane game, always being there for me, and most of all treating me better than any papa should treat a grandson! I love you so much and words can't describe how much I will miss you. I'll always be your bud and you'll always be my bud and most of all you'll always be my papa! I'll miss you bud. Love you papa, rest in peace.

I worked alongside Bob for the better part of 20 years. He was an outstanding newspaperman. He repeatedly saved the day for us.
He was a well-rounded man who did, indeed, regularly brag about his family.
I am saddened by his passing.
