Vitus Kaiser Obituary

Vitus Jerome Kaiser was born on May 3, 1929, to Marjorie ("Ma Kaiser") and John Kaiser, in the front room of their home on Cherry Street, in Erie, Pennsylvania. He died peacefully on September 9, 2020, in the sunroom of his home, around the corner from where he was born.

In between, he travelled many roads -- but nearly all of them in his beloved Erie County. Throughout his life Vitus, known as VJ, was one of the most ardent fans of Erie. He believed that there was no better place on earth to grow up and live. Dad believed he had a good, full, life and his children agree. He loved where he lived, he loved his family - his wife, his children, his brothers and sisters and his extended family. He enjoyed school, relished wrestling and playing football for Cathedral Preparatory High School (Prep) and for North Carolina State University (where he earned a degree in physical education) - regaling his family with fond memories from those years. In 1953, he married his high-school sweetheart Mary Ann (Humm) to whom he was happily married for 63 years. He served in the United States Army following college and then moved back to Erie where he worked at the Erie Forge and Steel.

Art, especially landscape painting, was VJ's passion. By 1959 he was pursuing this passion in earnest, studying art under the tutelage of Joe Plavcan, a renowned Erie artist. Although VJ favored the watercolor medium for the spontaneity and freshness it captured and brought to his landscape paintings, Joe's more structured style was still a strong influence on his art and VJ cherished his mentorship. In 1970, VJ succeeded Joe Plavcan as the Art teacher at Technical Memorial High School (Tech) in Erie. This was his dream job. He loved teaching and was delighted and honored that he was able to teach, mentor, and nourish these budding artists, several of whom have kept him updated on their careers and whose contact he enjoyed throughout his life. He was very proud of their successes and that he was able to contribute in some small way. In 1984, the Erie School District honored his commitment to teaching by bestowing upon him the "Teacher of the Year" award.

Vitus was a member of the Pennsylvania Water Color Society, the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artists Association, and the Erie Art Museum. He enjoyed being an active member of the vibrant Erie Art community and counts many members, past and present, of this community among his cherished friends. Over the course of his career, he received many awards. In addition to the awards received at various competitive exhibitions, he is listed in "Who's Who in American Art" and the "International Who's Who in Art and Antiques." In 1983, VJ had the privilege of being selected as one of Gannon's University's "Distinguished Pennsylvanians." Gannon University always held a special place in his heart. It was in the Schuster Galley of the Gannon Library where he held many exhibits of his paintings. In 2000, he was bestowed with another treasured honor when he was inducted into Cathedral Prep's Headmaster's Hall of Fame, known as the President's Leadership Council.

Along the way VJ and Mary Ann had nine children, 20 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Vitus was preceded in his death by his wife Mary Ann Humm Kaiser and survived by his nine children and their partners: Mary Beth (Bob Koda), Ann Brehm (Chuck), Karen Phillips (Jim), Michael (Sherrie), Peter (Chris), Ellen Marchione (Greg), Vitus "VJ" (Brenda), Jennifer, and Stephen.

Family events and holidays were a full-house celebration enjoyed by all including his grandchildren: Matilda, Zachary, Samuel, Olivia, Cobalt, Erie, Summer, Peter "PJ," Benjamin, Nicholas, Timothy, Matthew, Samantha, Vitus, Emma, Sarah, Lynn, Grace, Katherine, Annie and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Gerald "Jerry" Kaiser and a sister Anne Kaiser Bolash, and a large extended family.

Vitus believed in the goodness in each of us, and that "always doing and giving your best was it's own reward." This is the spirit he lived by, and instilled in his children and students.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made to the Inner-city Neighborhood Art House, the Lake Erie Region Conservancy (LERC), the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, or the Northwest Pennsylvania Artists Association (NPAA).

Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, social distancing restrictions will be in place for the viewing and the service. Viewing will be held on Monday, September 14th, from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38 Street, at Greengarden Boulevard. The funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday, September 15th at 9:30 am. I don't think anyone that had the pleasure of having Mr. Kaiser as a teacher will ever forget him. When I find myself struggling with a painting today, I always go back to the basics taught to me many years ago by this kind man. And it never fails when I think of Vitus, one of his entertaining stories will pop into my mind and put a smile on my face. I hope his family is comforted, knowing he is remembered with fondness, by so many.

It was a great learning experience and great pleasure to have been a student of Mr. Kaisers. While being in his class not only did I enjoy learning the fundamentals of commercial art from him I also enjoyed his stories about everything from his childhood, to his time spent out in the field painting.
Always interested in the lives of his students and what we were doing, he would ask us to share with the class what we did with our time off. In turn, he would have us look at and critique his paintings he had done over the weekend. Always a true motivator and inspiration.
I always appreciated listening to how much he loved everything from the people in his life, a nice pair of cotton socks, learning a new word and coming home to his favorite dinner, his wife’s home cooked roast beef.
He was the most enthusiastic teacher I ever had and one who loved to share his knowledge while also acknowledging and sharing what he has learned from his past students over the years.
Those years, in his classroom were some of the best.
He was a fantastic man indeed!

There was a time in my life, when the Kaiser-home was a part of my universe because of my partner of the heart in high school and early adulthood. Vitus and Mary Ann gave shelter and nurturance to a wonderful 'Kaiser bunch'...and ensured a warm and boisterous place to visit and share holidays, weekend visits, and later in my life...providing someplace to touch base occasionally with a couple important contributors of caring and mirth to my life.

I've lived away from Erie for several decades, and have seen less and less, and communicated less and less...with all. But the family helped write a couple chapters in my journey, and accidentally seeing a notice of Vitus's passing this evening...just jolted me significantly.

I'm thinking of all of you this evening, and the challenges you will face to lift and nurture your intragenerational ties with the loss now of both of the wonderful pair of Vitus, the patriarch, and Mary Ann, the matriarch. We Chaffees have trouble holding the ties of 4 siblings together, spread to all corners of the nation.

I wish you well in this journey of grieving...renewal...and learning of yourselves in new ways. He filled his lungs well with Life. I hope you felt your closing moments with him sent him on his way with his and your hearts full.

Love you.

My dear Mary Beth...Iam so sorry for your loss...I don't even know if you would remember me...we were work friends at Big Scoop but coming in contact with you and knowing of your dad at Tech was enough for me to know that you came from very good stock...kinda corny...anyway at this most difficult for you and your family know that you are being thought of fondly....jim kwiatkowski

I was in his first class at Technical Memorial. He was amazing and sweet. When I left Tech he said; No matter where your life choices take you, draw or paint everyday. I saw him two years ago and wondered if he would remember me, he most certainly did. I wrote this poem that evening.
MY ART TEACHER

10th grade Commercial Art
Technical Memorial
the class of 1973
almost had to be cancelled
due to the sudden retirement of
Joseph Plavcan artist extraordinaire

So many students had applied
with an acceptable gift
that instead of rejection
and causing a rift
It would take two, to take his place
So it became that
Roy Ahlgren and Vitus Kaiser
were both given space

I was blessed to learn from this man
and to become a lifelong fan
I marveled at how his water colors
appeared as photos to me
Each petal and leaf painted
so intricately

He taught us to measure
with pencil and thumb
During a lesson on shading
he asked some, for the darkest dark
against the lightest light in the room
After class guesses missed their mark
he finally shared with a grin
It's Thasia's hair against her white blouse
I felt like a celebrity from within
For over forty some years
I have carried his voice
Saying to me
“No matter your life choice
Draw or paint thirty minutes each day
and stay true to yourself to find your own way”

I have marched up and down
some very steep trails
Oh the stories my heart could tell
When looking back on really good times
What shines, is getting encouraging words
from the artist and man, that I hold most high
God Bless You Vitus J. Kaiser
You changed the world

I just watched the video in the article by Ron Leonardi on your father. It brought chills to me listening to your father's voice and seeing his pictures. What a wonderful memory you will have to be able to hear his voice. From the time I was flower girl in your parent's wedding, to watching him playing cards at the family reunions, to visiting one of his shows, to looking at the paintings hanging in his home in total awe -- to know him was to love him. VJ was such a kind, loving, extremely talented man. He will be missed. I wish I could be there with you. Sending my condolences to all of you.

Dear Kaiser Family,
Your father was the kind of teacher that students never forget. We referred to him as Dad! Not only did he instruct with a firm command of his subject, he taught other life lessons in his fatherly way, creating a mutual respect and love between students and teacher. My years as his student at Tech absolutely provided the most important tools I needed to become an artist. I have fond memories of your Dad and my Dad sharing a few beers, eating good cheese and discussing art and life in our kitchen. It was a great thing when the Kaiser family moved in around the corner from us. So many good memories of your whole family.
Much love to you all.

VJ, I was saddened to hear of your father's passing! I have many memories growing up and going to school with you. Many times I can remember being over your house and looking at all the paintings your father had displayed. As an adult I have a fond memory of my mom and I spending an hour or more with your dad in his home listening to him recall where he was when he painted the pictures and how it made him feel. I've purchased four of his paintings and they are proudly hung in my home. I will fondly remember him each time I look at them and smile as I recall him telling me of the day he painted them! My condolences to you and your family and to your brothers and sisters!!

To the Family of Vitus Kaiser:

It is truly a sad day in Erie and in the Art Community, where I first met Vitus in the late 60's. My memories of his kindness and his sweet nature, his generosity with his time and talent, and his boundless enthusiasm for LIFE in general will remain with me forever. He touched so many lives on his Earthly journey, and I am eternally grateful to have known him, worked with him, and learned from him.

The highpoint of one crisp October day many years ago, was a field trip that I arranged with my colleague, a Biology teacher at McDowell Intermediate High School where we taught, to take two vanloads of Biology and Art students to Presque Isle for a day of Science and Art. Vitus agreed to meet us near Beach 11 to lead my students in a session of 'Plein Air' painting. When we arrived, VJ had set up easels, anchoring their legs in the sand, displaying some of his framed paintings, and he had already begun working on a new watercolor painting on his drawing board. Seated on a folding chair, dressed in a winter parka with his familiar straw hat anchored tightly on his head (it was a bit windy that day), paint tubes, palette, brushes, and a water container at hand, he was a sight to behold! The students were spellbound, to say the least, and after his demonstration, discussion, and Q & A with the students, they found places on the beach for themselves to begin their own paintings. It was a magical day that I will never forget.

May God bless all of you who, like me, have very special memories of VJ. And may you, VJ, my dear friend, rest in peace. Love you, "Honey Bunch".

Blessed to have know VJ and sending love and prayers to all.

May your memories bring comfort and peace as you celebrate a life well-lived.

VJ was, without a doubt, the kindest and most caring artist I've ever known! His concern that he incorporated in each Schuster Gallery exhibit, made working with him as the Curator of the Gallery, an experience that I will always treasure. It was with VJ'S advice and guidance that I was able to develop a gallery that the community and the artists valued and enjoyed. VJ is truly the "godfather" of the visual arts in Erie! I could always count on him for an honest, but always gentle, opinion which greatly influenced the future of the Schuster Gallery. VJ was a champion of the arts who will be very missed by me and the art community. God bless you VJ! you now rest in the palm of God's hand next to your beloved sweetheart Mary Ann!
