John Kaspers Obituary

John Newton "Jack" Kaspers

John Newton "Jack" Kaspers, formerly of Bloomfield Hills, passed away from heart failure on Friday, January 3, 2020, at the age of 62. Jack was born in Sterling, Illinois, on May 10, 1957, to June and Lambert Kaspers. At age 10, Jack was regionally ranked no. 1 in 12-and-under in tennis; he competed for several years as a preteen and teen in South Florida's Orange Bowl tennis tournament; he maintained his no. 1 regional ranking in his age group for a number of years; his sophomore year at the Cranbrook School, Jack won the Michigan state tennis championship, and later played on the Northwestern University varsity tennis team. Jack graduated from the University of Michigan, attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and then obtained his law degree from Atlanta's Emory University. Jack practiced law and played the piano professionally in Michigan and New York. Jack is survived by Sarah Root Kaspers, their two sons, John Lambert Kaspers (a student at the University of Michigan) and Thatcher Andrew ("Andy") Kaspers (a student at M.I.T). Jack was a kind and loving father who described his sons as his "personal motivation and inspiration." Jack also is survived by his siblings Karen Jackson, William Kaspers, Richard Kaspers and Robert Kaspers. In addition to tennis, law, piano, and family, Jack loved and was an accomplished singer. Jack undoubtedly will be a contributing addition to the choir of angels.

I extend my condolences to Jack's family. I just learned of his passing and am saddened as Jack and I were friends at Cranbrook School. I have fond memories of Jack's love of music, his kindness and sense of humor. Rest in peace dear Jack.

So very sorry to hear of Jacks passing. The Kaspers were our backyard neighbors in Bloomfield Township and I knew Jack growing up in high school and then at college. We spent some time together with mutual friends at Cranbrook and then again in college at UofM. In addition to Jackss incredible musical and sports related gifts, I most remember having fun and laughing with him and his genuine kindness. I can only imagine that he would have been a wonderful father and friend.
My sincere condolences to all family and other friends. God bless you all.

What a loss...even though we haven't seen him since high school I remember that Jack was always such a positive presence and force - so talented, so humble, with such a great sense of humor and fun. A real loss to the world. Condolences to his family and close friends.

So sad about Jack. My condolences to his family. In 1975 I played 2 matches against him and we became friends. He was always so good natured and relaxed that it was hard to believe how fluid his tennis game was. He had so many talents. Several years later I was glad to be his personal attorney for some time and we renewed our friendship. He leaves a giant footprint and I will never forget him.
