Alan Edward Olson, 60, passed away on Saturday, March 28, at St. David's in
Round Rock, TX. He was born on June 15, 1965, in
Honolulu, Hawaii at Tripler Army Hospital to Jack and Jean Olson.
Alan had three loves in life – music, golf and meteorology. He began his music studies at Eastman School of Music in
Rochester, NY in 1982 studying clarinet with Dr. Stanley Hasty. New York climate was a shock to this young man who grew up in Texas and after one year moved back to Texas. He began his studies at Baylor University in
Waco, TX with Dr. Richard Shanley in 1984. He graduated from Baylor with a Bachelor of Music in 1989. Dr. Shanley continued to be a mentor to Alan for many years. He then began his studies at Northwestern University with Dr. Robert Marcellus and graduated with a Master of Music in 1990. Alan also received an MBA at St. Edward's University in 2001.
Alan won an audition for Co-Principal Clarinet in the Elgin, IL Symphony and played with them from 1989-1998. He taught clarinet in several Chicago area schools. Once again, he longed for the warmer climate of Texas and returned to Austin in 1998. In 1999, Alan became Co-Principal Clarinet in Corpus Christi Symphony where he performed until his death. In 2001, Alan became an Adjunct Professor of Clarinet at Baylor University. He retired from that position in 2011.
From 2001-2024, Alan worked for Jackson Hewitt Tax Service in
Cedar Park, TX. He loved solving tax problems for his clients and in 2018 he was honored with Tax Preparer of the Year. In January 2026, Alan started working for Intuit preparing tax returns.
Golf was his second love in life. In April of 2001, he did what every golfer dreams of doing – hit a Hole-in-One at Jimmy Clay golf course – 142-yard 5th hole with an 8 iron. Alan played golf whenever he could in between teaching private clarinet lessons. He had to quit playing golf in 2005 when he was diagnosed with MS. He continued to watch golf tournaments on television and loved both men and women's golf.
Meteorology was a hobby and he loved studying forecasts. And, of course, Texas doesn't disappoint with an array of weather issues. He kept his family well informed of weather conditions.
Alan was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ione Richmond Pozzi and his paternal grandparents, Dorothy and Merle Olson.
He is survived by his parents Jack and Jean Olson; sisters, Susan Boggs (Ty) of
Highlands Ranch, CO and Aimee Olson of
Paonia, CO; his aunts, Joyce Salfisberg (Ron) of
Naperville, IL, Barbara Olson of
Bolingbrook, IL, Sandy Richmond of
Sandwich, IL, Janice Richmond of
Sheridan, IL. His nephew, Gavin Weiss of Palisade, CO and his nieces, Harper Boggs of
Salt Lake City, UT and Dru Boggs of
Seattle, WA. Alan is also survived by many cousins and dear friends, and special friend, Ivan Petruzziello.
A private memorial service is planned in early May in the Resurrection Garden at Triumphant Love Lutheran Church.
Contributions in Alan's memory can be made to Corpus Christi Youth Orchestra at ccsymphony.org.
