McCOLLOUGH, ROBERT "BOB" HASLETT, M.D.
Robert "Bob" Haslett McCollough, M.D., age 79 of Gainesville, FL passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2016. Robert was born in Atlanta, GA on December 12, 1936 to Robert Walter McCollough and Ruth Elizabeth Wellborn. In 1946, the McCollough Family moved to Ft. He attended the University of Florida 1954-1958, and then attended the University Of Florida College Of Medicine 1958-1962. While in medical school, Bob was elected to AOA Honor Medical Society and received the John B. He completed his internship in Internal Medi-cine 1962-1963 at Shands Teaching Hospital.
Bob served in the United States Public Health Service in Communicable Disease Center, stationed in Kansas City, Kansas 1963-1965, where he ran and completed a large study of children involving the booster effect of Sabin polio vaccine in children previously vaccinated with Salk polio vaccine. He did his residency in Internal medicine 1965-1967 on the Harvard Medical Service at Boston City Hospital. Third year residency 1967-1968 in endocrinology and cardiology at Shands Teaching Hospital under W.C. Thomas, Jr. M.D. and W. Jape Taylor, M.D.
Dr. McCollough entered private practice 1968 in Gainesville with his colleagues and friends Drs. Andrews, Cunningham and Dace; forming the Gainesville Medical Group, practicing at Alachua General Hospital. The GMG was instrumental in attracting Hospital Corporation of America to build a hospital in Gainesville, which led to the surrounding North Florida Regional physicians' office park.
Dr. McCollough was president of the Florida Diabetes Association in 1973 and served as Chief of Staff at NFRMC 1976. He was board certified in Endocrinology and Metabolism; Internal Medicine; and Hospice and Palliative Care. He was recognized as an accomplished clinician and educator; practicing for 45 years, the last 15 of which were with Haven Hospice. His interest in philosophy led him to hospice work, and to become a Hospice Medical Director. He was affectionately known as "Dr. Bob" by the hospice staff, his patients, and their families. Dr. Bob was loved by all for providing compassionate care with gentleness and respect.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Nancy L. McCollough and four children- Dr. Mark McCollough (Robin), Dr. Linda McCollough, Cynthia Thibault (Mike) and Erin Sellers (John). He loved his children and grandchildren and was proud of their accomplishments. Mark is a Radiation Oncologist, Linda a Veterinarian, Cynthia a Jeweler, and Erin a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He had 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Jane Elizabeth McCollough.

The date has come and gone of daddy's death. I think of the kind things you said about him and the kind words spoken on your behalf. As life moves on as it must, that in no way takes away from the gifts you both left on this earth. Death is not extinguishing the light, it is putting out the lamp because dawn has come.

Bobby, you would be so pleased to know Jennifer was chosen to walk at the Kentucky Oaks
Derby with 142 breast and ovarian cancer survivors from all over the United States. Thank you for all the time and love you devoted to us as a family, for the research and phone calls but most of all for the support during those hard times. We were so blessed to have you in our lives for over thirty years. I haven't forgotten that it will be three years this month that you spoke at daddies funeral. Nancy had a wonderful husband and I a wonderful brother in law. (I think you know that even now)

Bobby was such a special person to everyone in our family. He was so intelligent. I will always remember how soft and kind his voice was when he spoke. How each word seemed to thought out. I remember as a child on Thanksgiving Bobby and grandpa sitting in the recliners watching football. I will never forget all the reaserch he done when I was diagnosed with cancer. He complied so much information and set for hours going over everything with me. I just hope he knew how much I appreciated it. I love you very much!

I'm deeply saddened i didn't get to attend Dr. McCollough's celebration of life yesterday. I wanted to be there to represent the "Cunningham girls". Dr. McCollough was a great friend to my father, Richard, but also my mother, Ruthie. He helped us "girls" through a tough time when we lost Dad. I was so thankful he was the doctor at the ET York Hospice Center and assisted with guiding us down a tough journey. Always kind, with a hug and his sweet demeanor. My thoughts and prayers are with his whole family. We loved your Dad and he will be truly missed!

My heart goes out to your family. I was blessed to work with Dr. McCollough for 8 years, and, yes, he was kind and compassionate, with a broad perspective. I especially admired his role as "teacher" frequently done in a subtle, even covert way. Thank you, Dr. Bob, for allowing me to be one of your students. Sincerely, Marie A. Norris

Uncle Bobby, you were one of the most intelligent men I knew. You always knew how to make someone laugh with one of your unforgettable jokes. I remember once going to eat at Waffle House with you and Shelby; we had one of the best conversations. I feel like we got to know each other better after that day. I will always love you and will remember you for the strong, caring, loving man you were. Love you, Uncle Bobby.

It's so hard to realize I will never answer the phone again and hear, "Hey Al, it's Bobby". In the hospital I held his hand and said "I'm so sorry this has happened to you, he said "I am too". We can't always control what happens to us but hopefully we can control how we accept it. What a wonderful example of grace you were until the very end. Thank you Nancy for giving him the gift of seeing all his wishes were honored. True love isn't always easy but it holds fast when all else falters

I echo the sentiments of others who were fortunate enough to work with Dr. Bob at hospice. It didn't matter your role or what initials you had after your name, Dr. Bob valued your thoughts and input into how best to care for the patient. He was patient, kind, compassionate, and had a passion for teaching others. I once told him that one day I'd expect to open Webster's dictionary, look up the word physician, and see his picture there. I was blessed to have known him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May you be comforted by many fond memories and the knowledge of the deep and profound impact he had on so many people.

Dear Mark et al,
I am so very sorry to learn of your Dad's passing. He had become an iconic player in the history of Gainesville medicine and touched many lives. I hope that you all will be able to find solace by keeping his memory close to your heart. And by remembering the legacy of goodness that he left behind.

It has been many years since I've seen you, but am sending warmest regards and love during this sad time for your family.

February 25, 2016

Dr Bob treated my husband, John D Williams, for diabetes for many years, and I went with him on many of his appointments. Dr Bob was very warm, caring and gentle. He always had time to answer questions, and give advice. He once told John, "If it tastes good John, you're not suppose to eat it." John and I laughed about that remark quite often. My husband went home to be with the Lord in January 2004. He was under hospice care. When DR Bob heard of his passing, he stopped by my home to offer his condolences, and a hug. He wasn't only my husband's physician, but also his friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time.

Uncle Bobby,
I'm not sure I could fully express how much you meant to me. You were one of the most compassionate, caring, kind and considerate individuals I have had the honor and true pleasure of knowing. I will always cherish the memories of you and our family in my heart. One of my favorites occurred just this past summer when you, Ethridge and I had breakfast at Waffle House as your treat. It was so good just to be in your presence, with your wisdom and hilarious corny jokes. Thank you for loving me and my family so well. I'll miss you. Love you Uncle Bobby.
