FRED GLASER Obituary

GLASER, FRED

06/05/1929 ~ 08/13/2010

Fred Glaser passed away at his home in Gainesville last Friday August 13. He was born in Galesburg Illinois, June 5, 1929, the youngest of eight children. Don Hawley his life companion, daughter Krystal Higgins, his sister, Marieva Palmer, and two grandchildren Kody and Ross Higgins survive him.

Fred was driven all his life by a strong urge to be creative. As a young man he moved to Chicago where he could pursue his dreams. He created several successful hair salons where he soon became best known for his incredible ability to cut and style women's hair in order to match and fit their personalities. Sought after by the famous, he met many stars. In 1965 he met Barbara Streisand at the beginning of her career. For her, he created a "Sense of identity" which lead to many years of collaboration on her road to stardom. But, sculpting was his passion. Before leaving Chicago, Fred had a successful show of his work at the Richard Himmel Design Pavilion. Moving to Florida to pursue this passion, he creatively resurrected all six of his residences, making the ordinary into the unique, all the while continuing to sculpt. Along with his partner, he founded the well-known restaurant the "Lorelei" in the Florida Keys. Keeping a written record of his experiences he recently completed an autobiography, "Pin Curls", covering these important years of his life. He authored two other books as well: "Face Facts" and "Charley the Crow". Fred always said, "There is an incredible feeling of elation and strength when you construct an idea in your mind and then make your body and hands obey". His creative spirit will be missed.

No formal services will be held upon his request. Contributions may be made to Haven Hospice of Gainesville Florida in his name.
