I have a lot of great memories of Dick Dougherty. Here are a few.
Near the end of his playing career with the Bobcats, an enterprising local television station in Green Bay put a microphone on him during a Bobcats game. This had to be in '63 or '64, a high-tech stunt given the era. The television station isolated him on every one of his shifts and spliced the video and sound together afterwards. When Dick's game was shown on television the following week, it was edited down to about five minutes. His audio was bleeped more than a few times in the shifts that were shown--anyone who has played hockey can relate--but on one of two goals he scored in that game, he muscled a backhander from the left point that made it through traffic and past the goaltender, who never saw it coming. An unbelievably strong shooter and skater--sturdy on his skates as well.
One day Dick showed up at our house with a four passenger 1964 Ford Mustang convertible, the first year they came out. It was cherry red, if I recall, and he said he paid $2,400 for it. Dick's glittering Mustang was damn impressive sight to a nine-year-old.
Here's another memory: All of the former Bobcats who created the Bay Shi Gun Club on Louie Obermeier's farm near Shiocton can never forget those days and nights when we went hunting for pheasants and deer. Two guys -- Dick and Bruce Shutte--always seemed to do the cooking. Dick was forever talking about how great the venison tenderloins tasted. He was right. Best food in the world, especially with those people on those days and nights. And finally...My grandma Dier bought a subscription to the International Falls Daily Journal for our family. Dick, being a Borderland Boy through and through, would stop by the house every week or so to pick up back issues of the Daily Journal, which we saved for him, and to shoot the breeze with my Dad. I happened to be in Green Bay during the early 1990s when Dick stopped by to pick up the papers. Here's the conversation:
Dick Dougherty: "Hawk, what are we going to do when we retire?"
Dick Dier: "Why don't we drive around Shiocton and pick up aluminum cans off the county roads?
Dick Dougherty: "I know where we can get some big plastic bags."
Farewell Dick Dougherty. We will never forget you.

Judy and family
My prayers and thoughts go out to you. You and Dick were our best man and maid of honor at Jack and my wedding way back in July of 1972. Where did the time go?!!! Jack and Dick are probably playing cards, duck hunting, or just having a manhatten.. The world lost and heaven gained a great wonderful person.
God bless.

Mr. Dougherty was so nice to all of us kids growing up. He always let us play baseball in his yard and I don't ever remember us asking... they don't make em like him anymore. His friendliness and warm heart is shown in his family... very sorry for your loss.

My condolences to the Dougherty family. I knew him when he was with the Bobcats. I was just a kid who lived down the street when he lived on Fisk. I have lived in Minnesota for a long time and so learned his backstory years ago. There was a great picture of the Gophers getting on a plane years ago, which I still have. As a kid he was friendly and funny. I still remember him jumping over the boards to help a teammate, even though he was far from being the biggest player on the team. Great memories. Sad to learn of his passing.
