Dear Carol,
To my most special and best friend I ever had,
I am so very sorry I wasn't there for you. I just found out about Joel today. I am so sorry. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.
My heart goes out to you. Also, to Murry, Mona, Michael and the rest of the Canino family.
Joel will be forever etched in my mind and heart, as the gentle soul with a very sharp mind and big kind, caring heart. He loved you and his family so much. Joel's face always lit up when he was around Murry and Mona when they were little. Especially when Mona would say "Papa!"
I cherish all the holidays, birthdays, Christmas times, our families have spent together in Tahoe, Tiburon, NYC, Conn.and RI. Those were some of my most favorite times ever!
I can recall playing tennis with Joel in Tiburon and coaching Mona's baseball team. I will always cherish the quiet moments I had with Joel sitting on the porch and on the beach in RI.
Just like the red wine he loved to enjoy, Joel aged to perfection. He had a deeply colored, simple but complex, full of flavor, rich, pure life that he spread to all his family and friends to enjoy as well. He was a great and wonderful man that I had the pleasure to be good friends with.
There is always a great woman standing right next to a great man like that...Carol, you are deeply loved and cared about. I miss you and love you.
God bless Joel.
With our deepest sympathy and our greatest love,
Mary Greisofe,
Meagan and Andrew Bickerstaff

Canino Family,
I am shocked and sad upon learning that Joel passed away. I worked for Joel at Sauer in the late 70s in Pittsburgh and Charlotte (when he had the black Porsche). Though he was a very, very tough and demanding "boss", I truly loved working for him. Joel was as sharp as they come. If you were on the "other side of the table" you knew you were up against a tough negotiator. Joel was always straight and fair. I followed his success in the later years and was proud and happy for Joel. He remains an inspiration to me. I thought about picking up the phone and calling him now & then...now I wish I had.

To the Canino Family,
I was very saddened this morning to have heard about Joel's recent passing. I have only known Joel for a little over a year, and during this time, we worked across the table on a very difficult business issue. Even in these turbulent business times, Joel stayed steadfast in his honesty and integrity. I will always think of Joel as a friend.

My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to all who have been hurt by Joel's passing. The world has lost a great man.

So sorry to hear of Joel's passing. In 1979, while working for Sauer Industries, Joel returned to his alma mater, Canton ATC, to hire one freshly minted graduate from the Air Conditioning Tech. program. That lucky guy was me.

Joel had a positive influence on me. I remember Joel picking me up at a hotel early in the morning for my first day of work, driving through the hills and dales of Pittsburgh faster than he should have. Rumor has it he had driver's licenses from various states because he kept racking up so many speeding tickets in his snappy Porsche, which happened to match his business personality. If he got pulled over in Pa., he would show his Ohio license, so he would just have to pay the fine but not loose his Pa. license. Like many hearty Canton grads, he found a way to get things done.

I remember his quick step to accomplish the work at hand. I remember him saying "Darren, you need to burn the midnight oil" in reference to completing a project.

I am glad he never caught his son, Mike, and me shooting rubber bands at one another in the Sauer offices of the old Heppenstal Steel building in an older mixed use neighboorhood of Pittsburgh.

Joel represented the type of student his teacher Harry King was proud of - energetic, hard working, industrious and charitable.

Thanks for the opportunities Joel.

Dear FamiIy, I never had the opportunity to meet you, but I did have the opportunity to fish with Joel on several occasions, as my son, James., was the Captain of the Double Down during those years when getting away for a few days on the ocean was so rewarding for him. He was so happy being on the water. If the fish were biting that was an extra. One of our great trips was to the giant tuna grounds off Nantucket. We had a terrific weekend, catching 2 giants; one that ran about 900 lbs. Joel couldn't have been happier, landing both fish after great fights...BTW, somewhere on one of my computers I have a picture of Joel with that fish...Man against Sea...it was a time to remember as I always will....Joel was gentle, considerate, generous and always intellectually stimulating. I'll remember the times we spent together on the water and the many conversations we had about the World's problems... with always warm memories..To you, Joel, thank you!!!

I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with Joel in 2004 and 2005. As his boat captain I got to see him when he was enjoying life to the fullest. Following his passion for the sea and fishing. We had many great times together. Catching Giant Bluefins in the Northeast to competing in Marlin tournaments in the Mid atlantic, And even venturing to the southern Bahamas to some of the most remote and prestine places on earth. We caught a lot of great fish, but more importantly we captured some great moments. Simple moments which brought a tremendous amount of Joy to Joel's life.
All the time we spent together Joel was always fair and trustworthy. He carried himself as if always having a plan and moving in the right direction. We admired his sucesses and repected his integerity. The time I spent with him I received some great Mentoring. I can honestly say he gave me something, by simply being the great man he was.
We will miss him and always remember Him.

Joel was one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege to meet. His quiet, honest and forthright manner along with his wisdom were attributes that made him special to many of us who worked with him with the Canton College Foundation. His generosity to so many is a tribute to his willingness to share his great success in life. To have known Joel was to have one's life enriched. He brought great joy to so many. My thoughts are with Carol and his family.
