Arthur BREAULT Obituary

BREAULT, Arthur "Art" Arthur "Art" Raymond Breault, of Lebanon, CT, passed away on Wednesday, (March 30, 2011) after fighting a courageous battle against cancer. He most loved golf, traveling, laughing at his own jokes and spending time with his family and friends. Even in illness, he continued to enjoy life. Art was an inspiration to others over the years with his positive attitude and sense of humor. Art was born on November 20, 1949 in Willimantic, CT. He began his life-long love of education at the Willimantic YMCA teaching swimming and managing the summer day camp. He received his bachelor's degree from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1971 and within the same year he started his 24 year teaching career at Tolland Middle School. Over the years, he received his Masters Degree, his Sixth-Year Degree in Educational Administration and his Superintendent's Certificate from the University of Connecticut. In September 1995, Art took the position of Assistant Principal at Parish Hill High School. A great honor was when the graduating class of 1997 asked Art to be their commencement speaker. In July of 1997, he became the Principal of the school. Art's ultimate career goal was to become a superintendent of schools. He achieved his goal and completed his career by serving in this capacity for the town of Ashford, CT. Art was always highly respected and loved by faculty, staff and students. Art served several terms on the board of education in Windham, CT, including service as Vice-Chair. He pursued his love of coaching over the years at Tolland Middle School, Willimantic YMCA, and Windham Youth Organization. Art always recognized that he learned from his students and this was part of his style and how he made a difference. One of his most famous quotes amongst his colleagues, students and friends was "Are we having fun yet?" He clearly did throughout his career and life. Art was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Mary Breault of Willimantic and he is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Lynda (Chesmer) Breault, son and daughter-in-law, Neil and Amy Breault of Worcester, MA; daughter and son-in-law Andrea and Doug Moshier of Barrington, RI; one grandson Calvin Moshier; sister Debra Breault of Willimantic; his Aunt Leona Pizzitola and her family of Amston; parents-in-law, David and Dorothy Chesmer of Lebanon; brother-in-law and his wife, Robin and Kathryn Chesmer of Lebanon; sister-in-law and her husband, Patricia and James McMahon of Mansfield and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank Dr. Dinesh Kapur and the staff at The William W. Backus Hospital, section A2, and Hospice VNA East, Mansfield. Their kindness and support was invaluable during this time. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life ceremony that will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Graywall Farms, 49 Chappell Rd, Lebanon, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in the name of Arthur Breault, to The ECHO Cancer Foundation, 330 Washington St, Suite 220, Norwich, CT 06360 or Hospice of Eastern CT, 24 Ledgebrook Dr., Mansfield, CT 06250. Arty Breault was one of those older guys that I looked up to as a youngster. When he was around the Laurel Lane neighborhood or at the YMCA, he always gave time and attention to me. After reading his obit I know that my admiration of him was well deserved. It shows he lived his life giving back to the youth who came after him. My condolences to his family on their loss.

My memories of Art go way back to the early 70's when we were in our twenties and life was waiting for us to arrive. Now, on the verge of retirement from the field of education myself, I remember fondly the days we spent working together at the good old Willimantic YMCA. Mostly I remember his laughter, his opitmsim about the future, and the way he had of finding something fun in even the most difficult situations. It's no wonder that he had so many adoring students over the years! My thoughts are with all of his family members during this difficult time.

Those of us who had the privilege to teach with Art have seen many educational philosophies come and go. None is more sensitive to what is best for our kids than WWBD -- What Would Breault Do? Art's buoyancy and sense of perspective have guided colleagues and students alike. What a fine man and special teacher!

Mr. Breault was my 8th grade history teacher in 1987-1988 at Tolland Middle School. He was the one that inspired me to major in history in college. We are so deeply sadden by Art's passing. Art was so much more than an administrator to Jim. He will never forget the dark. cold, snowy night that Art sat with him in the office at PHHS, waiting for the FedEx truck to delivier the Visas that would allow us to travel to Russia to adopt Alex. The support he gave us during that stressful time will be something we always remember.
Jim has always listed Art at the top of the list of people who were instrumental in getting the PHHS hovercraft program going. He championed the Principles of Technology class and saw that it was something that would be so positive for the students and the school. Walking down the hall one afternoon after the first craft had been finished, finally, he patted Jim on the back and said simply, "So, you're going to build another one, right?" Thanks to his support of the program, not just one, but many more were built.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. Art was a great man and he will be missed.

Lynda and family,
All of us who have been in Art's presence have been blessed by him in so many ways. He had a heart that was as large as the world. He reached out to everyone....students, faculty, staff, friends, family, and strangers with equal caring. He epitomized excellence as an educator as he was a choreographer... he empowered us to go forward with our ideas and our creative directions. He listened and was always a support for all. His humor made us love life as he did. He created these special environments that were comforting, loving and joyful.May his life be a light for all of us as we go forward in our own lives. My blessings to his very dear family.
