Myra Rabinovitz Obituary

Myra (Young) Rabinovitz, of Bloomfield, CT, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2020. She is survived by her daughters Amy (Rob) and Julie (Jeremy) and her grandchildren Abby, Max, Simon and Zach. Myra was a graduate of Conard High School and Skidmore College, where she was the Captain of the Women's Tennis Team. Myra was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Rockledge Country Club with her friends. She was a huge sports enthusiast and was a loyal fan of the UConn Women's Basketball Team, the NY Giants, the Boston Red Sox and Celtics. Myra attended every one of her daughters' high school soccer games and tennis matches, and often drove to upstate New York to watch Amy play college tennis. She loved shooting hoops, kicking around a soccer ball, and going to professional baseball, soccer, and basketball games with her grandsons Simon and Zach, as well as discussing players and sports statistics with them over FaceTime multiple times a week. Myra was always the first in line to purchase preview tickets to the newest Broadway shows. Bringing her grandchildren to Broadway gave her great joy, and her grandson Max has now been inspired to pursue theater studies in school. Myra was a loyal friend to many - she was a wonderful hostess and made sure that her guests were offered fabulous wine and fed well. She loved traveling to Europe and the Caribbean with friends and her daughters, and enjoyed visiting Napa to visit vineyards and taste white wines with Julie. For 37 years, Myra taught high school World History, Current Events, U.S. Foreign Policy, and AP Psychology. Myra's dedication and gift for teaching was unparalleled. In 1994, she received the Clarkson Award for Inspirational High School Teaching and in 1999, was voted Teacher of the Year in East Granby, becoming a semifinalist in the State of Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program. Myra was an expert on the Vietnam War and the Holocaust, and she was a recipient of the Joseph Korsenic Award for Holocaust Teaching and Curriculum Development. In addition to inspiring her students in the classroom, Myra embodied the spirit of education both in her workplace and in her personal life. She was a mentor to young teachers, a student advisor to the LGBT Club, a fierce advocate for human rights, and a true feminist who raised strong daughters to carry on the work. Myra loved engaging in discussion and debate about current issues, always with a focus on pursuing justice and equality for ALL. Myra encouraged her friends, mentees, students, daughters and grandchildren to pursue their dreams and fight for what is right. Myra's granddaughter Abby attributes her strong work ethic and willingness to fight for what she believes in to the many lessons learned from her grandma. Myra leaves a legacy of love, kindness, generosity, social justice and equity, which will continue through her daughters and grandchildren whom she loved so much. And Myra would urge everyone to vote for Biden/Harris on November 3. Contributions in Myra's memory can be made to the Ellen Jeanne Goldfarb Memorial Charitable Trust, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. A celebration of Myra's life will be held at a later date when family and friends will be able to gather safely.

Mrs R was truly one of the great teachers who truly cared about their students and she had a true passion for the subjects she taught. She was tough but fair and knew how to motivate all her students to give their best.

Julie, Amy I want to let you know that I think of your Mom often. Every round I play at Rockledge prompts her memory accompanied with a chuckle. Every time I go to putt on the 8th hole I remember the day she sunk an IMPOSSIBLE downhill putt. I laugh every time. Best wishes and love to both of you

Myra an I played racket ball and tennis while teaching at EGHS. She was a real tough competitor who was humble and had a great sense of humor. I had many meaningful conversation with Myra over our twenty years together. She left us too early and went too quickly, I never got to hug her and say goodbye. I will always have a void in my heart for Myra, I will remember lessons she taught and forever mourn her passing.

Love you Myra

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Mrs. R. She was one of my favorite teachers when attending East Granby High School. I'm now a teacher and that career choice was easy to make after having such great teachers like her growing up. May she rest in peace.

I am deeply saddened by the death of Mrs. R. She was my teacher, and after graduation, she was my friend.

One of the memories that I have of Mrs. R is that she had scheduled a test. That day, I stayed home "fake sick." However, that evening I was hosting the E.G.H.S Variety Night.

When I next saw her, she said: "You were sick during the day, but you were wonderful at Variety Night."

The next time I went to class, she informed me that she would give me a "make up" exam. Well the "make up" exam was ten times harder than the original exam.

What is funny(or sad),
is that I would not have EVER passed the original exam.

I will miss her.

My condolences to Mrs. R's family. May she rest in peace after a life well lived. She was one of those teachers for whom it truly was a calling and she had a gift. My daughters were fortunate to have had such a wonderful teacher.

Myra was my mentor teacher when I did my student teaching at EGHS!! She was the best ! ..I would say that the reason I have been a high school Social Studies teacher for the last 24 years is in large part because of her inspirational tutelage!

I credit my pursuit of history and museum studies to my high school classes with Mrs. R. Years later I look back at those times with such fondness- she really was such an inspiration in the classroom. My condolences go out to her family - but hopefully you can take away how loved she was by her students - and admired, even years later.

I knew Mrs. R as a student at East Granby High School. It's so rare to find a teacher who treats students (teenagers at that) like complete individuals and creates space for them to come into being as inquisitive, opinionated, caring human beings. Mrs. R encouraged us to strive to discover ourselves and hold empathy for others, for which I'll always be so grateful.

I'm glad that I was able to keep in touch with her to some extent after I graduated from college. I believe the last time I called her was about 6 years ago when I needed advice on a difficult work matter. As always, she was ready to listen and offer thoughts, and was so joyful in her response. She also mentioned how much she enjoyed retirement, golfing, and spending time with her grandsons. I wish I had followed up with her after that call, but I hope she knew how special she was to me as well as all the students' lives she touched.

In high school, she would share little stories about her daughters Amy and Julie, through which she imparted life lessons, as well as shared her love of her children and motherhood.

Sending deep condolences for your loss with the warmest regard,

Mina Kim

My deepest condolences to your family. Mrs. R was one of my favorite teachers. I had her for multiple classes in high school. She encouraged my love of history and current events which I went on to study in college. I loved discussing current events with her. After graduation, myself and some friends continued for some time to visit with her. She always had a smile on her face and was a supportive, incredible person. She will be missed.

Dear Myra's Family - In East Granby High School, no one did more to prepare our children for life, for higher education and to be a life-long learner. She was a great teacher and as anyone who had the honor to meet her - she was even a greater person. We all have fond memories of time with Myra. Our family is sorry for your loss and grateful for sharing Myra with us here in EG.

I had the unique experience of attending a very small public high school in East Granby, CT where classes were small and I was with the same group of 50 students 1st grade through 12th grade. Teachers taught multiple classes so I had the pleasure of being taught by Mrs. R from 9-12th grade in various subjects. However, the most memorable was definitely AP psychology. This class was composed of six girls and the seven of us would have phenomenal discussions and learning opportunities. I can really credit Mrs. R and that class for my pursuit of studying psychology in college and becoming a school psychologist. Mrs. R gave everything to her students. She was a strict teacher and some would call her tough, but she had high expectations and wanted us to work hard. I respected her, and I learned from her. Someone I will never forget. RIP Mrs. R.

To the Rabinovitz Family,

We are so sorry to hear of your great loss. As an East Granby family for over 20 years, we came to know Mrs. R as parents & students. Her passion for teaching numerous subjects, her sense of humor and her sense of justice was admirable. We knew her to be a fierce advocate for her profession, her colleagues and her students . It has been a privilege to know her and she will be missed.

Dear Myra,
We were suppose to have lunch together in January. I guess it will have to wait a few years. Thanks for being such an inspirational human being. You picked me up when I was down; you led me to still waters, you inspired me to do better and to be a better person in every way! You cannot be replaced and I know you changed many lives for the better. Rest In Peace and be very proud of your Legacy to this world!

I will never forget the few semesters that Myra filled in for me as I served in the Connecticut State Senate. Her dedication and commitment to teaching, and her popularity with the students and the staff was an immense help to me and a great comfort when I had to be in Hartford doing the business of the Senate. Personally I found her to be a great friend. She had a delightful wit and could make me laugh when I was burdened with work. She also had wonderful insight, profound insight, commitment and kindness. I will never forget her!

To Mrs. R's entire family, I am so sorry to hear of her death. She was my history and foreign policy teacher and my tennis coach. Her foreign policy class inspired me to pursue my BA in international relations. She invited our class for a cultural dinner at her home before a lecture at the JCC that she coordinated and the tennis team over to enjoy her pool! She was always smiling and supportive and I remember her laughing in the halls with her fellow teachers.

My wonderful friend Stefanie said it best the other day when we learned that she was close to passing: Myra Rabinowitz is a legend. She gave everything she had to her students, especially if you were lucky enough to have a special relationship with her as I did. Not only did I have her as a teacher for several high school classes, but we also developed a real friendship, especially after I graduated. She was my theatre buddy, my seat mate for every Broadway field trip, and she even attended all of my performances as well. When she gave me back a graded exam once, she returned it with a mix tape she had made me of her favorite show tunes. She used to give me extra time to complete assignments when she knew it was opening weekend of the school musical. She helped me write my college application essays. We had hours-long conversations about anything and everything when I called once in awhile to check in. I visited her at home, and we went on “dates” to see a show at Goodspeed Opera House and go out to lunch.

As a theatre critic, she was tough. As a teacher, she was tougher. If you weren’t willing to work hard, you probably didn’t like her (and she was probably disappointed in you). Our AP Psychology class was comprised of just 6 girls. The 7 of us had so many incredible discussions and it was so special to know that we were her “favorites.” Teachers aren’t supposed to have them, but we all know they do. Students definitely have them, and she was mine.

She retired several years ago, and I am ashamed to say I lost touch with her just these past couple of years as I got busy with my own family. The end of her life is a heartbreaking loss for her family, all of her former students, and for the world. She was sharp and smart and strong. She had opinions about everything. You could even disagree with her, but you’d better be well-prepared to debate your side. She fought hard, laughed hard and loved with her whole heart. Truly one of a kind... the kind you don’t ever forget.

May her memory be a blessing.

My deepest condolences to your family and sincerest gratitude for all that "Mrs. R" was for me and countless other EGHS students. We all need those people who push us to be our best selves and who see and nurture within us something we don't always see ourselves. Myra was just that for me. She believed in me before I did, and pushed me towards a course of success, happiness, and growth that I don't know I would have otherwise found. I will forever remember her as someone who changed my life for the better and whose words and way of being I will never forget. Rest in Peace, and thank you for all you are.

Dear Julie and Amy, I am shocked and so sad to learn of your mother's passing. Her dedication to both of you is the reason she and I became friends as a result of our sitting together at your soccer games.
