ADELE FASKE Obituary

FASKE, RETIRED SENIOR JUDGE ADELE SEGALL, daughter of a pioneer Miami family, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at her family home in Miami. The Segall family moved to Miami in 1910 and were founding members of the first Synagogue, Beth David Congregation. Adele was born on December 9, 1915. Downtown Miami's Flagler Street was a dirt road, and young Adele's memory of watching the brightly clad Seminole Indian families coming to market, and workmen tarring Flagler Street for the first time are memories she loved to recount. She received her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Miami. After graduation from law school, she joined her brother, Sidney L. Segall, in his law practice. In 1953 she was appointed by Governor Dan McCarty as the first woman Assistant State Attorney in the history of Florida. She served loyally in the Dade County State Attorney's office for more than two decades. She was Chief of the Nonsupport Division and the author of the Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement of Support Act (URESA), which due to her lobbying, was enacted by the Florida Legislature in 1967. This landmark legislation prevents delinquent parents from evading their child support duties by moving to another state. URESA has been adopted by every state in the nation. In 1976, the people of Dade County elected her a Circuit Judge. Throughout the years, Adele Segall Faske received innumerable accolades from a variety of organizations for her long-term service to the community. She is installed in the Juvenile Justice Gallery of Honor in Dade County, and is a member of the Iron Arrow Honorary Society of the University of Miami. She accomplished all this while rearing three children who loved her very much and of whom she was very proud. She maintained her sharp mind and memory until the end. Adele Faske was an amazing mother, jurist, mentor, friend, role model and a beautiful, caring human being. She will be missed deeply by her relatives and countless friends. Her daughter, Dr. Ivy Faske (Jack Mayer), and her son Barry Faske (Dr. Jacqueline Shellow) survive her. Her husband, Maurice M. Faske, died in 1976 and Barry's twin brother, Garry, died in 2005. Services for Judge Faske will be held at 2:00 Sunday, November 29 at Beth David Congregation, 2625 S.W. 3rd Avenue in Miami. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the PKD Foundation, Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), Beth David Congregation or Catholic Hospice. Or just help someone in need in memory of Judge Faske's exemplary life. She would like that. View this Guest Book at www. MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

I only remember good things about Judge Faske. I was a ward of the state back in the 80s, and she was my judge. She fought for me many times. Always stood up for what was right for the child and held every parent accountable. I will never forget her as long as I live. I´m sorry I never got to thank her for all she did for me and many others like me. Rest in peace judge, you will remain in my heart forever. Much love & Respect,

Ivy & Barry,
I was so sorry to learn about the passing of your beautiful wonderful mother. I knew your mother for many years. As a juvenile probation officer, I appeared before her many times throughout her years on the bench. She was one of the most caring persons I have ever met and she cared for every single child who appeared before her.. Athough I have been retired for several years I have thought of her many times and will always remember her beautiful smile..

My prayers and condolences to you and your family.

I had a telephone relationship with Judge Faske for many years, and was enamoured by her humble sweetness. When I had the pleasure of meeting her in person, I was not surprised by her beauty. Someone so charming on the phone, had to be really beautiful in person.
During all the years of our relationship, never once was there any mention of her "title" as a Judge. Her thoughtfulness, sharp memory and her wit were the things she chose to share with us.I was especially encouraged and blessed by her during the past year. She was probably not feeling her best, but she took the time to call and let us know she was praying for us. not only was she praying for us, but she never let me off the phone without sharing something humorous with me. She was determined to leave a smile on my face regardless of the situation.
I have also had the pleasure of meeting her children, and they are definate replicas of her. She obviously passed her wonderful disposition to them.
I was unable to attend the funeral as I found out about it at an inopportune time, but my heartfelt condolences go out to the entire family. There are no words which will comfort or fill the void, but take joy in the knowledge of the positive impact Judge Faske had on many, many lives. I will forever remember the humble, charming Lady, who went to great lengths to put everyone at ease in her presence.
May God continue to bless and keep your entire family.
