I feel both sad at Alan's passing and grateful to have known him at Waynesboro High School and more recently via mostly computer-based contact. I hope to "pay it forward" via renewed efforts to create a better world in whatever way I can. He was and will continue to be an inspiration! Best wishes to everyone who cared for him.

I didn't know Alan....never got the chance to meet him.... but I know Marcella and have known her since she was just "the Critter" , as we called her, when she worked for submarine support at NAVSEA in DC. I remember the day she informed all of us, who worked with her, that she found this "guy who studies wolves" in a small mountain village in Bulgaria and thought she loved him and he loved her. We all thought that this guy had to be a very special person Marcella to love. As it turns out. he was, and feelings were mutual. Well they got married while in Bulgaria and lived in that small mountain village. It was cold there, but it was Alan's love that kept them warm, along with a certain extra lager sleeping bag.
From what Marcella shared with us, their time together was not an easy road to walk down..it was a struggle but that chosen road was always filled with joy, love, respect and happiness..Alan, I wish that I had the chance to meet you.I would have thanked you for all that you did to make "the Critter's" life so full.
I am so sorry for your loss Marcella. I know there is nothing I can say to take away your pain or to fill the emptiness in your heart, so I'll just say that I am sorry for the loss of both your best friend and your Bulgarian sleeping bag partner - Alan.

Alan, Kathy and I will miss the long lunch conversations with you and Marcella. Your sensitivity and wit was always in evidence, even on the days when you were feeling the effects of that day's treatment. Your courage to soldier on under difficult circumstances was inspiring. We will miss your insights and your friendship. Rest in peace.

Alan had such a curious mind and variety of interests, it's hard to know where to even begin. It was a privilege to know him, and to play pool, annoy cats, dig in the garden, eat hamburgers, frolic in the surf, and just knock around. Through it all he kept a light touch. We will miss you dude!

We miss dear Alan, reading poetry to him over the phone, lamenting our Minnesota winter and taking about the latest global issues and how to rectify. We will miss a kindred spirit. Alan was one of the Illuminati indeed.

QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ALL SENTIENT BEINGS: A DECLARATION OF UNIVERSAL RIGHTS
In memory of Dr. Alan Wittbecker, dear friend and my former graduate student who dedicated his life to the recovery of our humanity and the restoration of the natural environment with the design of sustainable human communities and eco-economies. (See his writings at athttps://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7966854.Alan_Wittbecker). May his spirit live on in all we embrace for the common good.
The deteriorating human condition, paralleling and aggravating the deteriorating condition of the environment, cannot be denied unless we ignore the rapidly declining indices of quality, health, viability and sustainability of planetary life: Of ecosystems, biodiversity, individual animal and plant species and communities including indigenous human peoples along with their culture and native wisdom, many already extinct.
The planetary drivers of anthropogenic planetary dystopia---overpopulation, pollution and over-consumption---if not arrested by political, financial and educational intervention, will mean the escalation of transgenerational suffering as the wastelands spread along with famine, pestilence and war.
These drivers are surely in our reach to control since, after all, we are the drivers. To invest in the future is to commit to the present, the existential crisis of declining quality of life on Earth. Otherwise, if our Manifest destiny fails to embrace the global bioethics of respect and reverence for all life, humankind will surely join the Dodo: And if not physically extinct we will be extinct in spirit, of those qualities of humility, empathy and compassion that make us human.
So a first step is to give equally fair consideration to all living beings with scientific understanding of their place in the life community and healthful ecosystems, and animals' sentience and suffering under our inhumane dominion. To rectify the pathology and harmful consequences of anthropocentrism and replace it with an evolving eco-centrism, compassionate action and service is enlightened self-interest. Alan endured problem after problem that would have led most of us to retreat from work and life. But his spirit and inner rejoicing in life triumphed over everything. He had and wrote about solutions to many of the world's problems. Perhaps some day his writings will be "discovered." That the world thus far has paid little attention hardly seemed to bother him. He just kept thinking and writing. An amazing human being. John Cobb

Every once in a while, someone very special passes through one's life. Alan was that person. He was someone I admired for his wit, love of books and animals, and all of the qualities that made him such a wonderful human being. Rest in Peace Alan.. you will be missed.

My brother Alan was a special person. So talented, dedicated and serious, but also light-hearted and a funny guy! We had great times together and I shall miss him so much.
