Richard Lucas Obituary
Berclair, TX - RICHARD (DICK) MARTIN LUCAS, 85, of Fair Oaks Ranch, Berclair, Texas passed away on Friday, June 25, 2004 in Beeville, Texas following a short illness. He was born in San Antonio on November 30, 1918 to Bodien (Martin) and Richard Pryor Lucas. Except during school and three years in Beeville, Dick lived his entire life on the ranch and was a fourth generation rancher. He attended school in Berclair and Goliad and graduated from high school at Texas Military Institute in San Antonio. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and the Texas Cowboys honorary service group. During World War II, Dick was a bomber pilot for the United States Navy and served in the Naval Reserves afterwards. On May 3, 1947, he married Gerre Gillespie of Houston and they made their home on the ranch. Dick was a past chairman of the Board of Directors of the Commercial National Bank of Beeville, a former president and Director of the South Texas Hereford Association, an honorary director of the Texas and Southwestern Cattleraisers Association, a past President of the University of Texas Dad's Association and a longtime member of the Arts and Sciences Council at the University of Texas. He was currently a member of the Order of the Alamo, the German Club and the Argyle Club in San Antonio, the Two Hundred Horns club at the University of Texas and the Terpsichore Club and the Colony Club in Houston. In Beeville, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Beeville Country Club. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his loving wife of 52 years, Gerre Gillespie Lucas. He is survived by his daughter, Leslye Lucas Weaver and husband David J. Weaver of Houston; his son, Richard Martin Lucas, Jr. and wife Kimberly T. Lucas of Houston; his grandchildren, Alexander Lucas Weaver and Suzanne Elizabeth Weaver of Houston; his niece, Gloria Parker Starry of Longmont, Colorado and his nephews, John H. Parker of Longmont, Colorado and Lester G. Parker of Centennial, Colorado. He will be missed by the ranch cowboys, Enrique, Henry and Roger Flores; the ranch housekeepers, Elizabeth Flores Trevino, Alice and Rosa Flores of Berclair and his devoted caretaker, Juanita Rodriguez of Beeville. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Beeville, with Rev. Mark Spence officiating on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive visitors immediately after the service at the church. Interment will follow in Mission Burial Park South in San Antonio at 3:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Lon Cartwright, Lon Cartwright, Jr., Ed Larsen, Alexander Weaver, David Weaver and Raymond Welder.
