Laura Botkin Obituary

Laura Beth Botkin, resident of Houston, Texas, was tragically killed on August 12, 2012 in a serious car accident in Lubbock, Texas while returning from a trip to the Grand Canyon. She was 27.
Born in Ohio to Katherine Plavsic and James E. Botkin on January 1, 1985, Laura showed a tremendous affinity towards the arts and music from an early age. She began her formal studies in piano at the age of 4 and continued this passion through her collegiate years. Eventually she was drawn toward a love of singing, which led to her decision to study and pursue a career in voice.
During her collegiate years she was active as both a soloist and choral singer. In 2005, she was a finalist in the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition and was a 1st place winner at Georgia N.A.T.S. in 2004 and 2005. After completing the Bachelor of Music in Performance degree in 2006 at Mercer University, Macon, Georgia, she then completed her Masters in Vocal Performance in 2008 at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, Houston, TX where she studied voice under Professor Stephen King and later with Cathy Cowen.
Upon graduation from Rice, Laura taught piano at Lamar High School in Houston, where she discovered a love for working with and helping to develop young and talented musicians. This led to a position as a voice teacher at HITS (Houston International Theater School) where she had taught for the past two years until her untimely death. Her effervescence and quirky style were much loved by her colleagues and most especially by her students for whom she cared so deeply.
Laura's sparkly and irrepressible personality will also be greatly missed by the congregation and choirs of Christ Church Cathedral in Houston, where she was a staff singer for three years.
As a professional singer, she performed in the Houston Grand Opera's world premiere performance of Your Name Means the Sea and more recently made her musical theater debut in Country Playhouse's production of Avenue Q to critical acclaim.
Laura was a wonderfully vibrant and free spirit who was driven to succeed no matter the obstacles. She lived life to its fullest in a gracious and genuine way. Her joy in making music was as infectious as her laughter and she inspired all those around her. Laura was beautiful both inside and out. All who knew her and worked with her will profoundly miss her energetic personality and her smile that lit every room.
Survivors include her father, Jim Botkin (Fran); mother, Katherine Plavsic (Tim); brothers, James Botkin and Zack Plavsic; and daughter Elizabeth Muir Amacker, adopted at birth by Robert and Pam Amacker.
A memorial service will be held in at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston, Texas 77002 on Saturday, 25th August at 2pm with a reception immediately following in Latham Auditorium.
Donations may be made to the donor's favorite charity or to Shepherd School of Music, MS532, Laura Botkin Memorial Scholarship Fund, Rice University, PO Box 1892, Houston TX 77251-1892 or contact Gary Smith at 713-348-4047.

My heart and sympathy go to the family and loved ones of Laura. I met Laura when she was still attending Rice University, when she came to my house for a little cello recital of her friend who was staying at my home for the summer. Laura ended up performing a couple of songs and playing the piano...what a treat that was! Since that time I had the opportunity to get to know her a bit and enjoyed seeing her perform. What a light she brought to the world! I am deeply saddened by her untimely death, and I hold her family and loved ones in my thoughts and prayers.

Our daughter, Marina, was a student of Laura's at HITS. Marina's vocal confidence and ability blossomed under Laura's guidance. It was apparent that Laura had a gift and love from bringing out the best in young people. We will miss her. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
Sincerely,
Marianne, Carter, and Marina Smith

Dear Laura's family,

Laura was my 11 year old daughter, Macy's, voice teacher at HITS in Houston. Macy absolutely loved Laura and is heart broken over this tragedy. She has cried herself to sleep every night. Laura was one of the most vivacious, beautiful, smart, caring, and talented people we have ever met. She taught Macy skills and grace with her singing. Macy has been recalling all week special little things she said to her in her office and advice she gave her. She will forever remember these lessons and memories. She is so thankful and blessed for the relationship they had. Macy will always miss Laura, as will everyone who was lucky enough to know her. The last production Macy was in was a Valentine's recital. Laura was dressed adorable as always in pink and baked cupcakes for all of the kids for the reception. The finale was "Thank You for the Music" from Mamma Mia. I think this is so perfect because we thank Laura for the love of singing that she fostered in Macy. I told Macy this is the whole point of life, to make a difference - and Laura did!

We are keeping your sweet family and friends in our prayers.

Much love,
The Miller Family

Regardless of whatever previous engagement Laura might have had, she always found a way to accommodate my needs while I was the Canon Pastor at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston. She made every liturgy so much richer, so much lovelier, with the incredible gift of her voice! The love that we shared from the profesional to the personal point of view, has no measure. I shall miss her tremendously, and I send my loving prayers to all who mourn her death. May the Comfort of the Holy Spirit be with us all!

I am so very sorry for your loss. I did not know Laura except through the words of her friend and schoolmate Anna-Katherine Amacker as well as through Bobby and Pam Amacker. Our hearts are heavy with her loss as is so much of the country. Laura leaves behing a beautiful daughter in Elizabeth, whom I have the pleasure of calling her my niece. Sweet Elizabeth has a beautiful voice as did Laura. Rest in knowing she is truly at the right hand of the Father, singing in his heavenly choir. Lifting you all in prayer now and the coming days. Look to the Lord for comfort with blessings and grace for each of you.

No matter the briefness of encounters dear Laura, you touched so many lives. I shall never forget you and our time on stage together. May those who knew you find comfort that your spirit will live on in all those you have touched!

I knew Laura first as my niece's voice teacher for the past five years. My niece Adriana was inspired by Laura's mentoring and Laura helped her get into the Houston's High School for Performing and Visual Arts. Later I got to know Laura at HITS Theatre in Houston. She was a wonderful, joyful and patient teacher to my son and many lucky children at HITS. I got to know her this last summer as I waited for my son during his play rehersals. I saw her on an almost daily basis and she never seemed to have a bad day. She always had a smile and something nice to say to me. She was very supportive to my son Sean and we all adored her. I will always remember her as a lovely, smart, talented, happy, kind, and supportive young woman. Mostly she was a greatly beloved teacher and mentor to the children she taught and to the adults who admired and respected her.
With deep sadness,

Laura, we in the Houston singing community and in many places around the world are reeling over your passing. Woe that we could have the words to assuage your family's grief.

If we sing with more gusto, if we play stronger, if we dance with more heart, and if we live even a little better, such will be your monument.
