HARRY BUCKLEY Obituary

BUCKLEY

HARRY E., passed away at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia on March 13, 2010, at the age of 79, after a long and fulfilling life as an artist. He was born September 19, 1930 in Carlisle, Arkansas, the seventh of nine children of Jesse and Faye Buckley. From an early age, he knew that art was his vocation. After studying at the University of Arkansas, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1952, he served his country for two years as an artilleryman in Korea. Upon being mustered out, he entered the University of Iowa and worked with the distinguished master of printwork, Mauricio Lasansky, and he eventually received his doctorate in art history. His dissertation, Guillaume Apollinaire as an Art Critic, was subsequently published by the University of Michigan in their series, Studies in Fine Arts. He taught at the University of Iowa as a graduate student and thereafter at Carlton College and Temple University. He enriched his education through visits to the major art galleries of Europe before dedicating himself fully to his abiding passion as a practicing artist, remaining in the city of Philadelphia, his adopted home. He worked in a variety of media - print, pen and ink, water colors, gouache and oils - selling his artworks through a number of venues, including Louie's Art Gallery and the Sketch Box Gallery in Little Rock, Arkansas, and his website: HarryEBuckley.com. He was predeceased by his companion of nearly 40 years, Richard Gates. He is survived by two sisters in Little Rock, Marie Buckley and Evelyn Callahan, and one brother, Herbert Buckley, of Madison, Alabama, and by many loving nieces and nephews. There will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: University of Arkansas, Art Student Scholarships, University Development, 300 University House, Fayetteville, AR 72701. Please note that your donation is for art student scholarships in memory of Harry Buckley. Burial will be in the family plot in Carlisle, Arkansas.

Harry, you taught me so many things as I was growing up. I'll never forget how amazed I was at your patience when developing your beautiful art. Thanks for sharing your great talent with me.

what beautiful things he left for us to appreciate. Harold gave Mother one and of course it was left for me when she passed away.... a French countryside hanging in my living room for all to enjoy. I remember visiting Carlilse when I was age ten, eleven and twelve and Harry and Herbert tried to teach me tennis. What a beautiful family. Virginia Stockwell Broadaway ( Harold and Florence Niece)
