Robert Chaney Obituary
Chaney, M.D. Robert H. Chaney, M.D., 84, a long-time Pomona physician, died July 14 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Chaney had practiced in Pomona since 1955 until his retirement from active practice in 1990. Dr. Chaney was born June 2, 1919 in Monrovia, California and spent his boyhood years in Lo di, CA. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he received his Bachelor Science in 1941. During WWII he served in the Mediterranean Theatre in the Navy Epidemiology unit as a pharmacist working with illnesses such as typhus, smallpox, plague, malaria and dysentery from 1942-46. In 1947 he began his medical studies at Harvard Medical School graduating in 1951. Dr. Chaney did his post-graduate training at Los Angeles County-USC in Internal Medicine and Cardiology from 1951-55. In 1956 Dr. Chaney established his practice in Pomona with Dr. Edward Seinfeld. In 1974 Dr. Chaney served as Chief of Staff/President of the Medical Staff at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. For many years he was active in cardiac rehabilitation and served as chairman of cardiac testing at PVHMC. He also served as head of The Work Evaluation Center at Casa Colina Hospital. Additionally he was active in the Los Angeles County Heart Association serving as president in 1970. In 1947 Dr. Chaney married his colleg e sweetheart, Dr. Lorna M. Forbes. Dr. Chaney is survived by Dr. Forbes and their three children: sons, Victor, DDS, and his wife, Sharon; Bradford, Ph.D., and his wife, Heidi; daughter Holly Allen (Holly Chaney, M.D.) and her husband, Mark; a brother, William; and seven grandchildren. Dr. Chaney remained active following retirement from his medical practice in 1990 with medical consultations at Lanterman Developmental Center (formerly Pacific State Hospital) in Pomona. Drs. Chaney and Forbes have been ma jor donors to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center's Foundation and the hospital's Chaney-Forbes Transitional Care Unit is named in their honor. Visitation will be held from 5-9 p.m. on today, July 16 at Todd Memorial Chapel, 570 N. Garey Ave., Pomona. Services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Pomona, 242 E. Alvarado St., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 17. Interment will follow the services at 12:30 p.m. at Riverside Arlington National Cemetery and a 2 p.m. reception will be held at St. Pau l's Episcopal Church. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Foundation in lieu of flowers. Todd Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
