Ruth Samet Obituary

Ruth Cohen Samet, 89, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at Select Specialty Hospital, Overland Park, KS. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m., Friday, April 7, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue. Burial at Kehilath Israel Blue Ridge Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers, family suggests contributions to Kehilath Israel Synagogue or a program serving Jewish youth education. Ruth and Allen Samet were married in 1948 and moved to St. Louis, MO. In 1951 they moved to the Kansas City area and joined Kehilath Israel Synagogue. Ruth had taught not only at K.I., but also at Ohev Sholom Synagogue, Beth El Synagogue and The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah, tutoring both children and adults. Ruth had been the sole conversion instructor for women converting to Judaism, under the supervision of Rabbi Herbert Mandl. Her warm feeling and "motherly" approach with potential converts, had made her very popular over the years with a wide cross section of the congregation and the community. Ruth and Allen were involved and caring K.I. members where she served as membership Vice President, secretary and on the culinary committee for its Sisterhood and recipient of its Ayshet Chayil Award. Ruth and Allen were founding members of K.I.'s oldest Chavura Aleph. She was president of the Women's Guild at the Jewish Community Center, life member of Hadassah, member of B'nai B'rith, was a graduate of Hebrew Teacher's College, Boston, MA, and helped with Meals on Wheels, driving others who could not drive and doing errands for them. Mrs. Samet was born in Somerville, MA. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Allen R. Samet; her children: Kenneth I. Samet, Overland Park, KS; Cheryl B. Samet, Overland Park, KS; Stephen E. Samet, San Antonio, TX; grandson: Brett M. Samet, San Antonio, TX; sister-in-law: Eve Kagen, of Florida; nephews: Arthur and Margaret Geller, Conrad Geller; niece: Amy Brenner and her children, Cody and Casey; and her loving extended family and friends.
