Thomas Hafley Obituary

HAFLEY Thomas Warren, known to the many who loved him as Tom, died on Wednesday, Oct 28, 2015. He was 18 and a senior at Tates Creek High School. Tom died by suicide after living with depression for a long time. He is survived by so many who loved him, including his parents, David Hafley and Janet Shedd, his adored brother, Ian, many aunts, uncles and cousins, including Jean Shedd and Pulak Dutta of Evanston, Ill., Margaret Wieboldt and the late Ray Wieboldt of Winthrop Harbor, Ill., Dan Hafley and Jennifer Stout of Portland, Ore, Rick and Sue Hafley of Sarasota, Fla., and Dennis Hafley and Cindy Ciura of West Bloomfield, Mich.; and his cat, Stevie. He had countless friends whom he cherished, including Nathan Vranicar and Jacob Powell. Tom blessed us for many wonderful years with his creativity, kindness, sense of humor and adventure, bravery and joy. He loved cars (when he was young, Hot Wheels, when older, real cars!), made incredible costumes, played on the Tates Creek archery team since its inception, and most of all liked chilling with his friends. We will miss him more than words can say, but are grateful he has found peace. Thank you to all who love him and who tried their best to help him. We will celebrate Tom's life on Sunday, Nov 8, at The Arboretum Visitor Center in Lexington. Drop in between 1pm and 4pm, with remembrances of Tom shared at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Stop Youth Suicide campaign, UK Adolescent Medicine, c/o Hatim Omar, MD, 740 S. Limestone L412, Lexington, KY, 40536, or a charity of your choice.

It's been 7 years and I still think of you often and fondly Tom. I don't know what awaits us after death but I hope you found peace my friend. If we are lucky enough to see each other again, it will be joyous. Regardless I will remember our friendship for as long as my memory will allow. Rest easily.

When there are no words of comfort
That can stem the flow of tears
When I am stranded in the center
Of the rising tide of fear
When there is no path before me
When my feet have lost their way
I remember you are with me
And I am not afraid

My prayers are with you, David.

I loved Tom as a child when I babysat at your house. We all three had lots of fun shopping at the Dandelion Bead store. Your tribute to him was poignant. It can be hard to speak honestly about depression and suicide. So often mental illness hides in public behind a smiling face, revealing itself only after the door is shut and no one can see. Your choice to open that door and let the truth be known is an inspiration to all. All my love to this wonderful family.

I was lucky enough to know Tom in the classroom. Quiet, but every now and then he would just deliver a zinger...after seeing you all the other night, this was such a sad shock. I applaud your courage in discussing his death and the devastating problem of teen depression. I am so, so sorry.

Though you do not know me I wanted you to know that your loving tribute to your son brought me to tears. So many of us have troubled children and grandchildren and I pray not only for you and your family but also for Tom and the many other young people who suffer the ravages of depression. Your openness regarding this tragedy is commendable. God bless you.

My heart broke when I heard this news. I babysat Tom and Ian for many years, when I was still just a kid myself. Tom's favorite game for when I babysat was "Oregon Trails" not the computer version, but real genuine play, with chairs and blankets set up for covered wagons, and toys spread around the basement to collect as "food." He was so imaginative and joyous. (Even when he told me I was the "worst babysitter in the world" when I beat him at a board game.) Though I didn't see either of the boys after I left for college, I would occasionally wonder what they were up to, how much they'd grown, and if they ever thought of the old babysitter they used to call "sister." I am so, so sorry for this devastating loss, but am glad that Tom has found peace. Keeping you all in my thoughts.

I don't know you but please accept my greatest sympathy. I admire your bravery to speak openly about your son's cause of death. Suicide is rarely mentioned in an obit, your courage is amazing. My hope for his survivors is one day peace will be found. May Jesus wrap his arms around you as you learn to cope with this tragedy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. But I want to thank you so much for the honest, straightforward and brave obituary for Tom in the H-L. I think it's important to be honest when telling how people died, so that maybe others can be helped. I was really touched and moved by your well written tribute. Thanks--Frank Jenkins
