Neil Muyskens Obituary

Neil Muyskens
May 9, 1956 - March 8, 2021
Lexington , Kentucky - Neil Muyskens, 64, died March 8th, 2021, at home with his wife, Diane, by his side. Neil was born in Rocksprings, Wyoming and lived in 17 different places across the U.S before settling in Lexington. He attended college at Clarkson College in NY, and in 1978 started work at IBM, and later Lexmark, where he and Diane formed many lifelong friendships. Neil often shared the phrase "Friends are the family we choose", and he was blessed to have a large group of trusted and loving friends, for whom he was always grateful. Neil was exceptionally gifted, among a rare breed capable of both dreaming-up new adventures and also executing on them with passion, excitement, and ultimately success. In 1996 Neil founded Unicomp. Unicomp, a computer keyboard manufacturing company, was a source of great joy and pride for Neil. As with many other areas of his life, the people that surrounded Neil at Unicomp became another part of his extended family, and a valued set of friendships. Every year at Christmas, Neil would transform into a "modern day Santa". It was one of many traditions that he created, always built with a goal of creating new and lasting memories. Each year he would write and share a poem, documenting the year's most important memories for both himself and his friends. Many of Neil's happiest moments were while entertaining or planning trips for his friends and family. We were lucky to have him in our lives. Neil loved God and his family above all. He was baptized in September of 2018 surrounded by many friends and family. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed his time with them. He set an amazingly positive example for them, and for anyone watching, throughout his 5 year battle with cancer. Neil learned everything there was to know about his health condition, and battled harder than any of us will really know. Neil is survived by his wife, Diane; children, Robert (Elizabeth) Muyskens and Kristen (Daniel) Ayers; grandchildren, Emma, Alice, Henry, Oliver, Lillian, and Walter; mother, Nita Fain; and siblings, Jack and Anna. Neil was preceded in death by his father, John Muyskens. Arrangements are with Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Harrodsburg Road. Visitation will begin at 12:30pm Thursday, March 11th, followed by a funeral service at 2:30pm. He will be buried at Lexington Cemetery.

I hadn't seen Neil since probably 1976 but I still have great memories of playing basketball, cards, and running with him on the cross country and track teams at Mynderse. I have often wondered what became of him and it doesn't surprise me that he had a great life. I know that someday we will meet again. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Neil was a good person who never met a stranger. I am better in life for having known Neil. He will never be forgotten. We have lost a true pioneer and gentleman. RIP

Neil gave me some great memories in track when we were in high school. He was a track team member that always inspired me. I think about him often and smile. Thank you Neil

I'll always remember Neil as the energetic, loving, and gleeful friend from my dad's days at Clarkson. I like to joke that my choice to go to UK is the only reason Neil and my dad reunited, but I'm sure they would have at some point. Who could stay away from this guy for very long?? He made me feel welcome when I was far from home, and had such a great sense of humor. I'm so thankful I got to know Neil and his wonderful family, and I know his kind, industrious spirit will live on.

God will carry us through our journey of life, but occasionally grief can engulf us like a huge wave. When we are knocked down, just stay there and be at the feet of Jesus. He will raise you up and surround you with love. It’s the only way I know how to get through this time.
Neil, I’m so proud to have been your mom . You have always been honorable, trustworthy and loving. Thank you for all the wonderful memories I hold dear in my heart. Oceans of love, always and forever, Mom

We are so saddened to hear of Neil's passing. We are blessed to have been one of Unicomp's suppliers for the past 20 years. Neil was a true gentleman and we were honored to have been in business with him, he always treated us fairly and with integrity and respect. We will miss him and pray that God comforts his loved ones during this difficult time.
