Marjorie Horne Obituary

Marjorie Ann Horne

Knoxville, TN

Marjorie Ann Horne was born April 17, 1945 in Richmond, IN. She passed away peacefully on October 1, 2017, in Knoxville, TN, due to complications from cancer.

Marjorie grew up in Richmond, where she met and married her husband of 53 years, David Horne. They moved to East Tennessee in 1978. Marjorie was an artist, recognized nationally for her work in colored pencil and watercolor. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1981. She earned Signature Status and a Five-Year Merit Award from the Colored Pencil Society of America. Her work appeared and was awarded in numerous juried art shows and competitions, and was published in a book, The Best of Colored Pencil V. She was a member of the Art Market Gallery in downtown Knoxville. Marjorie exhibited in many solo shows in East Tennessee and around the country, including a shared exhibit with her sister Betty Hendrix in North Carolina. She was a devotee of light and possessed a patient, detailed technique. She took thousands of photographs as sources for paintings. In recent years, her favorite subjects were the landscape and wildlife of Cades Cove, Yellowstone National Park, Pawley's Island, and scenes of downtown Knoxville. She recently retired after over 30 years in accounting. Marjorie loved to attend live music and was a proud supporter of her sons, musicians Greg Horne and Tenzin Chopak. She also loved travel with her husband, museums, movies and books.

Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents, Robert M. and Eva Spalding, and her brother Rob Spalding. She is survived by her husband David Horne; sons Greg Horne (Paige Travis) of Knoxville, TN, and Evan Tenzin Chopak (Karen Johnson) of Ithaca, NY; sister Betty Hendrix of Whispering Pines, NC; and sister-in-law Gloria Smith of Swanton, OH, and many relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to Community School of the Arts, 900 Henley Street, Knoxville, TN, 37902.
