Sylvia Schulman Obituary

July 9, 2014 Born in New York City to Jewel and Benjamin Leibel, Sylvia Schulman nee Sylvia Ruth Leibel, age 94, passed away on July 9th, 2014 in her home in Beverly Hills. She attended Goucher College and at the age of 57 received her bachelor's degree in Psychology from Antioch University. In 1940 she met the love of her life Samuel Schulman and soon thereafter they were married and living in Scarsdale, New York. Sylvia became a Girl Scout leader and the president of Hadassah. In 1960 the family moved to Beverly Hills and it was here that Sylvia flourished. Her beauty and charm enamored many. Filled with compassion and interest in others, Sylvia made friends easily and maintained relationships for a long time. She actively volunteered first becoming a certified Braillist, then working at Women Helping Women guiding others less fortunate while also raising funds for the U.C.L.A. International Student Center. Not only was she an avid tennis player until the age of 82, her additional interests included knitting, bridge, crosswords and reading. Sylvia was an artist, painter and also an art collector. First and foremost, she was an entertainer extraordinaire. Her Chinese cookbook written with Madame Wong sold over 1 million copies. Governor Jerry Brown appointed her to the California State Board of Medical Quality Assurance. She is survived by her daughter Patti Feldman and son in law Dr. Edward Feldman and her loving, wonderful sister Elayne Barco, 5 grand children, 6 great grand children and 2 nieces. She is predeceased by her husband of 63 years Samuel Schulman and Daughter Susan Begley who are truly missed. Her accomplishments are many but more than this - Sylvia had grit and determination - she never gave up. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister and friend and she will truly be missed. I love you Mom. In lieu of flowers donations should be sent to: National Council of Jewish Women, Susan Schulman Begley Memorial Scholarship at 543 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, California, 90036. The entire family appreciates your thoughtfulness.

I was fortunate to have visited Sylvia at her home, and later at her retirement residence while visiting California. My Dad, Bernard Leibel was her first cousin, and we often talked about the branch of the family that went out West. I am sorry that we did not have the pleasure of visiting her more.

Even though I have not seen Sylvia for many years (my cousin) please accept my sincere condolences. Bernard Leibel and my wife Sylvia Zauder Leibel.

She was smart, caring, creative, and beautiful. Eric and my world will be a little smaller now that she's gone.
