Wayne Betz Obituary

Wayne R. Betz CAMP HILL Wayne R. Betz, 87, passed on to eternal life on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Golden Living Center, West Shore, surrounded by his family. He resided at the Susquehanna View Apartments in Camp Hill for the previous five years and on Fourth Street in New Cumberland, for 34 years. Born April 14, 1925, in Londonderry Township, Lebanon County, he was the son of the late Michael and Celia (Werner) Betz. Wayne graduated from Central Dauphin High School as an adult. He put his education on hold after eighth grade to help support his 12 siblings. He told his children stories about his early education in a one-room schoolhouse. He worked at the Olmstead Air Force Base in Middletown until it closed and retired from the Mechanicsburg Naval Depot. Wayne loved Philadelphia Phillies baseball and was a Philadelphia Eagles and Hershey Bears fan. In his youth, he enjoyed trapping. He was a baptized member of the River of God Church in Enola. He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Carrie (Robison) Betz (they both had the same April 14 birthday and married on that day); and four children, Karen Young (Regis Mark Barwin) of Colonial Park, Harrisburg, Kevin (Eileen) Betz of Quarryville, Kathy (Bruce) Shelly of Lemoyne, and Kelly Betz of Mechanicsburg. Wayne has five grandchildren, Julie (Jeff) Baskin of Enola, Andrew Young (fiancee, Alissa Altenburg) of Camp Hill, Zachary Betz of Quarryville, and Jason Shelly (Heather Kuntz) and Justin Shelly of Lemoyne. Wayne also had two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Ella Baskin of Enola. Also surviving are siblings, Gene (Yoshiko) Betz of Seattle, Wash., Keith (Ethel) Betz and Kay Reiner of Palmyra, Mike (Lucille) Betz of Hummelstown, June George of Lebanon, Ernest (Linda) Betz of Benton, and Phyllis (Bruce) Eckert of Elizabethtown; sister-in-law, Fay Betz of Palmyra; and many nieces and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by siblings, Bernice Gepfer, Doris Brooks, and Carl, Glenn, and Donald Betz. A viewing will be held on Monday, March 11, 2013, at 10 a.m. with the funeral service at 11 a.m. at River of God Church, 747 Wertzville Road, Enola 17025. Burial will be in Tri-County Memorial Gardens, Lewisberry. Memorial contributions may be made to River of God Church, River of God Childcare, 747 Wertzville Road, Enola, PA 17025; or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Central Pennsylvania, 2405 Park Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Wayne's family has entrusted his care to Stone and Murray Funeral Home, New Cumberland.

Carrie, Kathy, Kelly, & Bruce...our prayers are with you and all those mourning the passing of Wayne.
