Walter & I worked together with Saskatchewan Metis, attempting, for four years to find mutually-acceptable means to reconcile differences between the Province and the Metis Nation. Walter was an open, honest frank and effective negotiator; a real pleasure to work with.

Smishek family,
Our condolences on the loss of Walter. I remember well the shared time on 3E this past December at the General Hospital. It is sad to part with a loved one but comforting to realize the impact that a life well lived can have. The world is a better place because of people like Walter.

Hello Mark & Family
I just learned of your Father's passing last week - my sincere condolences to you and your Family during the Christmas Season.
While I never met your Dad, you always talked about him with pride and admiration - what more can a Father ask of a good son.

To Ruth and the Smishek family. Linda joins me in wishing you our deepest sympathy on Walter's death. Walter made significant contributions to the people of Sask and Canada, certainly by his roles as our Health Minister and as a member of the Advisory Planning Committee on Medicare - 53 years ago now. I was pleased to have interviewed Walter about the latter role on Regina's community radio station on July 10, 2012 - quite possibly Walter's last media interview.

Dear Joan and family, Men like Walter do not come along often...we in Saskatchewan were very blessed to have had a truly caring and honest man representing us in Regina such as Walter! My Grandfather often spoke fondly and respectfully of Walter and his life long achievements. He was truly one of 'those who changed the world'. Our deepest condolences to the entire family of Hon Mr W.E. Smishek. We lost a pioneer of the good life we all know in Saskatchewan

I was figuratively and literally embraced by Walter (Mr. Smishek) when arriving in Regina from Montana to become a landscape architect in Walter's beloved Wascana Centre, of which he was the Chair. He fully supported every aspect of the truly, leading edge Wascana Centre Act and in particular led the growth and well being of the Centre's employees. He was the last government member who fully recognized the importance of appropriate funding levels for the park. Walter's personal support to me and hs ongoing friendship
were instrumental in me completing a thirty-nine year career at the Centre. He was incredibly hard
and he was incredibly soft; added to his intelligence, integrity, and love of people, this good man was a hero and champion in so many ways. My deepest condolences to Ruth and the family.

Dear Ruth and Family,
From my family to yours, Ruth, I want to express our most sincere sympathy on the passing of Walter. While servicing in the Blakeney cabinet with Walter in the 1980's I always knew that he would be debating and making the strongest case to make life better for working families in Saskatchewan.
Thinking of Walter this morning i have many memories of a friend who was always caring and thoughtful. We will not be able to be with you on the 29th because of family commitments but we will surely be with you in spirit. Lots of love, Link

To the Smishek family,
Walter Smishek was known throughout the province for his contributions in many areas of life; he was a truly dedicated government minister. Our province could certainly use more ministers of his caliber. My condolences to his family.

Dear Ruth, Mark, Kelly, and Erica,
My deepest sympathies to you and your family on your loss. Walter- (or "Mr Smishek" as he will always remain fondly remembered from my childhood days)- was always a warm and avuncular gentleman. His wonderful and hearty laughter still resonates in my memories of many happy occasions shared by our families in those halcyon days. Love and hugs to you all at this sad time.

Dear Ruth and family,
Since, like Walter, I served as Health Minister and then Finance Minister, he told me on several occasions that, based on his personal experience, my next stop was Municipal Affairs and after that I would be given the "bum's rush" out of politics. Fortunately, I avoided the bum's rush. Even so, Walter's distinguished 18 year career in the Saskatchewan Legislature exceeded my 16 year tenure. Walter's commitment to fairness for working families is legendary, and was an inspiration to all who followed. He worked with others to make our province a better place in ways that benefit people all across our country including the public health care we take for granted and forget was only achieved because of the work of Walter and many others who had the courage to stand their ground. Although we will be out of the country and cannot attend the service, we send our condolences to you as you celebrate this extraordinary man.
Sincerely,
Eric Cline

Dear Ruth, my thoughts and prayers are with you. While I hadn't seen Walter in some time, he was always at the front of my mind when I thought about Saskatchewan and when I spoke to Mom and Dad - and he was always the story I told people when I talked about 'respect' for our parents' friends - how you folks invited me to call you Ruth and Walter - and that's the way I refer to you to my parents, but how in speaking to you, you will always be 'Mr and Mrs Smishek'. I am so grateful for Walter's contribution to our province, and for his steadfast friendship to Dad. My deepest sympathies as I mourn with you. God bless.
