Peggy Brown Obituary

Peggy Ann Brown

Holt, Michigan

Peggy Ann Brown, age 83, left this life July 23, 2015, to be reunited with her parents. She was born in Pontiac, Michigan, on August 9, 1931, to Fred L. and Margurite Green.

She is survived by her daughter Michele Brown and son-in-law Bobby Groschke.

Her public schooling included many schools throughout Michigan as her father was in suspension bridge construction for E. C. Nolan Construction Co. She proudly graduated from Pontiac Senior High School in 1949. She continued her education at Eastern Michigan University, receiving a teaching degree and occupational therapy degree. She later received her master's degree in education at Eastern Michigan University. While at Eastern she joined Alpha Sigma Sorority. Her teaching degree took her first to Nankin Township for two years, then to Northville, Michigan for three years, and eventually to Holt, Michigan for thirty-five years. Part of her teaching duties was serving as math chairman at the middle school for nearly as long as she taught math. Serving as coach for the Equations Team for many years was a joy. She presented math workshops for MCTM throughout Michigan and she published a metric workbook for students in elementary through middle school. She gave a knockout speech to the Insurance Women of Michigan. You've Come a Long Way Baby!

She served as a docent at the Michigan State Art Museum; enjoyed many luncheons with the HELO Club members; worked on the state, local and national elections in Holt for years; and was a part of great discussions at the Holt Library book discussions groups.

Yearly trips to the Bahamas with Evans made her springs complete. MSU football games brought out the entertainment genie, so Evans and Peg had a pregame spread for their friends and associates. Christmas was always a reason to have a yearly Christmas party first in the early years at the City Club of Lansing and then later at the University Club.

After retirement she filled in her spare time managing twelve rental units.

Her love of her Pugs was known far and wide. Her house was not a home without her Chinese Pug.

There will be a celebration of both Peggy and Evans' lives held late in 2015. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.

Michele, I learned more in your mom' s English class than in any other English class. When Mike and I remember the fine teachers we had at Holt, your mother was at the top of the list. And I will never forget her bringing you to piano lessons with my dad. Your mother would sit on the couch behind you and listen to the lesson....she was a very special lady.

Michelle, I have never forgotten your Mother, and remain grateful for all that she taught me. Oh, if today's public school educators could have your Mom as their role model today, our schools would be so much better. I'm nervous writing the, thinking she is looking over my shoulder inspecting my grammar. I remember her every time I watch 'The Guns of Navarone. The very best to you and your family.

Rest in peace Peggy knowing you left a mark on so many children. You made this world a better place. Oh ya, you were also a lot of fun. We had some laughs together at one of my first positions in Holt. That was Sycamore Elementary

I can only reiterate what so many have said. I learned to write interesting, concise papers that saw me through academics into my career, due to her challenging me. I saw how with skill she kept a class on an extreme learning track with students who would throw other teachers. She was amazing, caring and passionate. Many are in a better place in their lives because of her.

Michelle,

Your mother was a wonderful teacher. I didn't always feel that way in the 6th grade but she helped me get through some challenging times I was having at home. She taught me more than math, English and science, she taught me about life. My desk is always clean because of her!! Peace be with you.

Without a doubt she was one of the toughest teachers I'd ever have. She was my English Teacher at Holt Junior High School. Always being the class clown in school, I soon found out that she didn't play and was all about the business of learning! Looking back, I never thought I'd survive her class. However, her methods were highly effective. Some how,I passed and moved on to high school... no doubt in part to her dedicated efforts. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Mrs. Brown was a great teacher. I was a little afraid of her at first, but I learned from her and she cared about her students. After all theses years she is the one teacher that I remember the most. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Michele,
I was saddened to hear of your mother's passing. After reading the postings of others, I find thoughts that bear repeating; she left such a huge impression, she was tough on me, she was a hard teacher but her passion was amazing, the best teacher I ever had and one of my favorites, she believed in them, everyone, and would never accept less than their best. Her reputation was stellar, Michele, and I know you will miss her to the moon and back. My prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Michelle:
When I transferred to Holt in the middle of the 6th grade my mom told the principal I was a discipline problem (due to ADHD). Guess where I landed? Your dear mom made a VERY LASTING impact on me.
In spite of nicknaming her 'Battle Axe Brown', I made a point to telephone her several years after graduation and went to see her about 20 years ago.
If every teacher taught like your mom did the US would not be lagging behind other nations academically.
As I compose this tribute, I'm both terribly sad and yet smiling due to so many vivid memories.
Imagine my RELIEF when I graduated 6th grade. Imagine my HORROR when I learned I had Mrs. Brown for TWO classes in 7th grade as she'd been promoted. Actually, knowing what she expected made English & American Literature a breeze and quite enjoyable. Recently I had your mom's dedication to teaching to thank for knowing "Evangeline" was the answer to the Final Jeopardy question!
I'm very fortunate to have had your AMAZING mom as a teacher... TWO YEARS in a row. Her lasting impact is often thought of, more than you'd imagine.
My most sincere condolences on the passing of a truly marvelous teacher.
Sympathetically,

Sue Collins

Mrs. Brown was the teacher who made the biggest impact in my life. I had her in 7th grade for math and English. I remember reading "The Pearl", "Lord of the Flies", and writing descriptive themes. I'm sure I didn't appreciate her as much as I should have but I did before I graduated high school - she came to my graduation party! God bless your family in your time of loss!

As a middle school teacher she left such a huge impression on me. She was tough on me , but at the same time the most caring teacher. I rember when she was not happy with my penmanship . she would have me rewrite stuff until it wasn't to big or to small. I struggled with it a lot. but by the time I was done with her class I had my penmanship down. She helped me when I struggled with Math. She taught me how to dress like a lady and not dress like everybody else and dress appropriately. For her kindness and her determination to make me succeed has helped me in everything I do. When questions come up about my favorite teacher or one that made an impression on me. She is always my answer. Thank for being a great teacher and telling us stories about your pugs eating with you. Heaven has received another angel, who was brought there to help others be their best.

Out off all my teachers I learned to most from Mrs. Brown. She was tough as nails and sweet as sugar. My thoughts and prayers are with her daughter and family. She was truly one of a kind.

Michelle -
I wanted to take time to express my love and condolences to you and your family. Your mother was a friend, a teacher, a mentor, a supporter, and family as I was growing up. She always took time to check up on me through the years to make sure I was doing ok. She started when I was in 7th grade and never stopped into adulthood. Her love and support was always there. I will miss her dearly. Sending you and your family love and prayers during this time.
