Derrick Jones

Lansing - Derrick Francis Jones was born August 31st 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Dr. Hugh Faulkner Jones and Vernell Jones. He was a graduate of Lansing Sexton High School before completing both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Central Michigan University.

He is survived by: his mother; wife, Ann Jones; brother, Gilbert Jones (Josie); five children, Derrick II (Sophie), Andriana, Indiya, Madison and Dayton; three grandchildren, Faith, Lucas, and Noelle; as well as numerous cousins.

Derrick's professional path was one of helping others. He found himself working in multiple different capacities to help lead those in troubled situations to better lives and decision making including juvenile delinquents, those suffering addiction, and former felons with an approach that was built on love, just as much as it was on toughness.

Where Derrick also served his greater Lansing community was as a youth football and basketball coach. For over 20 years he coached at all levels, kindergarten to High School Varsity with an emphasis on hard work, dedication, education and honor to teammates and families alike, there is a large population of young men in Lansing who will always know Derrick as "Coach Jones".

Derrick was a caring father, loving husband, dutiful son, energetic grandfather, respectful brother, enjoyable cousin and a honorable man.

A memorial service will be held at the Jones household Saturday, June 19th at 1:00 PM: 1526 N. Magnolia Ave., Lansing, MI 48912. The family is being serviced by Riley Funeral Home.
