I was a maritime academy cadet and was assigned to work under Captain Liberty in 1978 on the T.T. Stuyvesant running crude oil from Valdez, Alaska to Puerto Armuelles, Panama for 103 days. I could not have had a better captain to work with in a training capacity. He showed interest in my school work as well as made sure I was working with the best mates on the bridge. It was one of my greatest experiences in life working on one of the greatest ultra large crude carriers, the T.T. Stuyvesant. I can't say enough about how he took me under his wing as a cadet, made me feel like a valued crew member, and exposed me to the true workings of a tanker and life at sea. Mrs. Liberty was on board as well and she added much to the experience.
Fair sailing Captain Liberty. You were a one of a kind. Thank you for all you shared, and the wonderful dual time chronograph you gave me when I went back to academy.
