William Frederick Weiss

BELLVILLE: The 10th Mountain Division was the last among currently active divisions to enter combat during WWII. Assigned to the 10th Division, William Frederick Weiss served in the European Theater, fighting in the mountains of Italy in some of the roughest terrain in the country. The hardships Bill experienced in WWII surley prepared him for his recent battle with ALS, also refered to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. For the past 13 years Bill remained motivated, optmistic and thankful. On Monday, August 16, 2010, William Frederick Weiss passed away in his home from complications from ALS. He was 86.
Bill was born on August 23, 1923 in Akron to Raymond and Elizabeth (Smith) Weiss. On October 13, 1944, he married Naomi Moury. Bill worked at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course as general manager and later as apartment manager for Truman Enterprises, retiring in 1989.
For five years, Bill was stationed in Colorado where he often hunted and fished. Described as having an adventurous personality, he loved the thrill of jeeping- climbing and riding on rough Colorado mountain terrain. Athletic and energetic at the age of 70 Bill began roller blading.
Gifted with a photographic memory, he enjoyed learning. Bill read books on boats and planes, nature, and history. Described as, "someone who would give away his last dollar," Bill genuinely loved people.
He was a member of American Legion Post #535.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Naomi Weiss of Bellville; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Jake Maness of Redstone, Colorado, son, Steven Weiss of Bellville and daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Roger Bowers of Dayton; seven grandchildren, Dennis, Amy and Teryl Featheringham and his girlfriend Bonnie, Tricia and Curtis Goff, Ty and Janice Bowers, Chad Weiss, Lori and Doug Thompson; eight great grandchildren; sister, Donna Stevens of Abilene, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family
Along with his parents; he was preceded in death by his brother, Edwin Weiss.
A memorial service celebrating the life of William Frederick Weiss will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m. The Rev. Ken Kinley will officiate. Military honors performed by the American Legion Post #535 will be held at the funeral home following Bill's memorial service.
Memorial contributions to the ALS Association or Jefferson Township-Bellville Rescue Squad may be made at the funeral home.
