John H. Jay Kern, age 88, of 1329 E. Mahanoy Ave., Mahanoy City, city died Monday evening at Schuykill Medical Center East in Pottsville. Born in Mahanoy City he was the son of the late Harold and Catherine (Dowd) Kern. He was a 1940 graduate of Mahanoy City High School and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a maintenance mechanic with Mack Trucks in Allentown with 44 years of service retiring in 1985. After retiring he secured his real estate license and worked for Charles Domson, Jay also worked as a funeral directors assistant at David D. Jarrett Funeral Home. He was a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church Mahanoy City and the Holy Name Society, Past Exalted Ruler of B.P.O.E. 695 Mahanoy City, the TPA, president of the former Wagners Gas House Gang, Social Member of the Humane Fire Company in Mahanoy City, and Mack Local 677. Jay also was the first president of the Mahanoy Area School Board after the jointure in 1960. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was a son John H. Kern Jr., a sister Virginia Eichman and a brother Harold P. Kern. Survivors: Include his wife of 54 years, the former Rose M. Miskar, two sons Anthony Kern and his wife Corinne of Elizabethtown, the Rev. Martin F. Kernpastor of St. Columbkill RC Church in Boyertown; a sister, Adelaide Rooney and her husband Joseph of Naples, FL; and grandchildren, John M. Kern, Sean Kern, Neal Kern and Amie Kern; nieces and nephews. Services: Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. in Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church with his son Rev. Martin F. Kern as principal celebrant,Interment will be in St. Canicus Cemetery in Mahanoy Township. Friends may call at the church on Thursday evening from 6 to 8:30 p.m. with Elks Lodge of Sorrow at 6:45 PM and on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of Mass. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, contribution to the charity of the donors choice would be appreciated by the family. David D. Jarrett Funeral Home Mahanoy City is in charge of arrangements.
