Stuart Kulp Obituary

Stuart Kulp, 77, of Ormond Beach, Fla., formerly of Bethlehem, died April 2 in Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach, Fla. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Hillegass) Kulp. He was a chemistry professor for Moravian College from 1957 until retiring as department chairman in 1992. A graduate of Gettysburg College, he received a master's degree and a doctorate from Lehigh University. Born in Pennsburg, he was a son of the late Francis and Roumaine (Staudt) Kulp. He was a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ, Bethlehem, and Pennsburg United Church of Christ. He was an Army veteran, serving as a sergeant with the 89th Infantry Division in World War II and as a lieutenant colonel in the Korean War. He was awarded the Louise E. Juley chair in science at Moravian College and received the E. Emmet Reid Award of the American Chemical Society. He was elected a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists in 1979, and was a member of the Sigma Xi Honorary Research Society and the American Chemical Society, Lehigh Valley Section. He was a member of Pennsburg Masonic Lodge 595, the Red Hill Band, and numerous other local bands in the Bethlehem area and Ormond Beach. Survivors: Sons, Timothy of Medina, Ohio, Christopher of Allentown; daughter, Christine Scott of Bethlehem; four grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Pennsburg UCC. Call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Snyder-Hinkle Funeral Home, 527 Center St., Bethlehem. Contributions: Stuart S. Kulp Scholarship Fund, c/o Moravian College, or to a charity of choice.
