Richard H. Weber, M.D.
Richard H. Dick Weber, M.D., 82, of Lancaster, died Monday, April 29, 2013. Born on June 14, 1930 on Flag Day, he was raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The son of the late Richard and Amelia Kulowitsch Weber, he graduated from Allentown High School. He graduated from Columbia College at Columbia University graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree. In 1956 he earned a Doctorate in Medicine from Hahnemann Medical College, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Weber then completed an internship at the Misericordia Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Inducted into military service from 1957 to 1959, he served as a Captain and as Chief of the General Practice Clinic and Emergency Medicine at Andrews Air Force Base Hospital, Washington, D.C. In 1959, Dr. Weber accepted a Residency in Family Practice at the Lancaster General Hospital (LGH), opening his family practice office in 1960 in Lancaster. For over 50 years, Dr. Weber was a devoted general practitioner, caring for his many patients, both young and old. In 1970, he became a Charter Member of the first class of Diplomats of the American Board of Family Practice. Dr. Weber also loved teaching and endeavored to impart his vast knowledge to students at his private office and in the hospital. He was Clinical Instructor and Preceptor at LGH, at Hershey Medical Center and at Temple University. In addition, Dr. Weber served the community over the years with several leadership appointments in hospital administration and professional medical societies. From 1964 to 1966, he served as Secretary of Lancaster City & County Medical Society and from 1969 to 1977 as President and Vice President of the medical and dental staff at Lancaster General Hospital, where he was also Medical Quality Management Coordinator. Beginning in 1973, he served on the Board of LGH, the LGH Foundation Board, and the LGH Professional Services Corporation. He was appointed to the Honorary Staff of St. Joseph Hospital as well as to that of LGH. Dr. Weber retired from clinical practice in 1995. Thereafter, he was appointed as Medical Director of the Visiting Nurse Association. In 2007, Dr. Weber was inducted into the Inaugural Class of The Societe Generalis, the recognition society that recognized him for Excellence in Medicine. Dr. Webers community involvement included: Cliosophic Society; Edward Hand Medical Heritage Foundation; Fulton Opera House; Honorary Board of Lancaster General Hospital; Lancaster Community Gallery; Lancaster Heart Foundation; The Pennsylvania Academy of Music. He was a member of Lancaster Country Club, The Pirates of Lancaster; and a past member of the Hamilton Club. Dr. Weber loved music and art, priding himself in his collection of trumpets and paintings. In 1985, he took great pleasure in helping to form the Auscultation Brass Band with fellow physicians and delighted in performing for annual community events and granting music scholarships. His ever-present work ethic and good humor constantly motivated and brought joy to everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.
Survivors: Dr. Weber is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 60 years, Shirley Batori Weber; and their four children, Heidi of New York City, NY, John (Sabrina) of Santa Barbara, CA, Amy W. Reid of New Canaan, CT, and Gretchen of Dallas, TX. In addition, Papa is survived by three grandchildren, Daisy Weber and Alexa and William Reid. Dr. Weber is also survived by his brother, Carl P. Weber, husband of Anita, of Allentown, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 1 p.m., at St. John Neumann Catholic Church at 610 East Delp Road, Lancaster, PA with Rev. Michael Culkin as celebrant. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the church. Military honors will be performed by Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard following Mass.
