Jessica Herrera Obituary

Resident of San Jose
Jessica peacefully joined her father Rosendo Herrera and brother Richard Herrera in heaven following a courageous battle with follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (a very rare form of cancer). Jessica's friendly personality, infectious smile and her kind and optimistic nature made her easy to be loved by everyone who knew her. Her dedication and sense of responsibility to all activities of her life earned her the admiration and respect of family, friends and colleagues alike.
Jessica was born in San Jose, CA, graduated from Overfelt High School and earned a double bachelor's degree from the University of Phoenix in business management and marketing. After seven years in the real estate industry she moved on to program management at Cisco Systems then Facebook, where she worked for nearly five years and loved her work and her colleagues.
Jessica lovingly raised her only son, Anthony, to become a productive young man who is dearly loved by his entire family and friends. Jessica is also survived by her partner Jonathan DiLeo; her Mother Aurora Lopez Herrera; siblings Luis Pavel Mendez, Maria McMurray, Rosa Yanira Mendez, Aurora Berenice (Betty) Mendez, Gilbert Herrera, Christina Zapien and Natalie Sanchez; very close aunt Elvia Lopez; very close cousins Sam Lopez and Erika Campos; very close childhood friends Frank Cavazos, Gina Medina, and Norma Lopez; a very large and loving extended family; and many close and dear friends. Jessica will be dearly missed by all who knew her, including her cats Wesley and Buttercup, who brought her much joy.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation and vigil on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014 at 5-9 pm (rosary at 7 pm) at Darling Fischer Garden Chapel, 471 E. Santa Clara St. in San Jose; and to funeral mass on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014 at 9:30 am at St Joseph Cathedral, 80 S. Market St. in San Jose. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 2650 Madden Av. in San Jose.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to Anthony's education fund may be mailed to Bank of the West at 50 W San Fernando St. San Jose, CA 95113-2423. Checks should be made out to Anthony R. Briggs with "Jessica Herrera" in the memo line of the check.

I did not know Jessica personally, but was greatly looking forward to working with her, as she had just joined the board of the California Bicycle Coalition (where I work), and her wonderful reputation preceded her. Sending deepest condolences to her family for your tragic loss.

Jessica was an elected member of the Silicon Valley Bike Coalition (SVBC) Board of Directors but her illness prevented her from participating as much as she wished. This means that the Board and staff of the SVBC did not get to know her as much as we had hoped and we certainly lost her smart and insightful input. She was an important member of the alternative transportation community as key staff for Facebook. Still, while we assess our loss, it cannot be compared to her family's loss, as she was a lovely and caring person and we know embedded in your hearts. The Board took up a collection for Jessica's son's education fund and are proud to donate a total of $800 to this very important cause. Bless all of you, and thanks for Jessica.
